i've been contemplating buying a ready-made setup, but it'd be cheaper (?)(not sure about that, depends how sussed i am) and fun to build my own. give me the components and i can build a computer...but i'm not a complete whizz at knowing what brands of hardware are good etc...
so question is: if you had say 1.0-1.3mill to blow on hopefully a fine desktop, what would you do...or what brand components would you buy, and where?(i'm guessing yongsan market, but any advice/extra info would be great)
i would prefer a mini-desktop.
thanks in advance.

You need to talk to Lemon, gajackson1, or Bulsajo.

There's a thread around here somewhere with all the links on the subject you could ever ask for... in the end, if you don't really know what good prices are for the various components or where to get the best prices, an off the shelf one with a warranty is probably going to be competetively priced anyway (of course you need to shop around just like anything else) - it all depends on what you want to do.

although it is fun to build a computer and quite satisfying. If you do not know what your doing, just go to yongsan and stop at a booth and have them put on a paper what you want and price each item. Take that price to the next booth and do the same over and over until one hits a price you want for everything your looking for. Youll probably drop the first price by about 100,000w or more and someone will charge you 20,000W to build it for you. No need to haggle this way. Buy an English Operating System off the wall in the yongsan tunnel for 15,000w and your ready to go. Save the headache unless you are comfortable with computer assembly.

Also, its only my opinion but you are gettign really ripped off spending over a million on a full desktop system unless you are getting a 19 inch LCD monitor with it. Custom built computers can run for 500,000w - 750,000w with pretty good specs if you take the time to shop the booths like I said earlier.

That's only half true. While going with bottom slow barrel memory, Celeron processor, cheap motherboards, slower running hard drivers, generic low end graphic cards and cheap-ass sound cards because the most intensive thing you ever plan to do is listen to MP3s while reading on the Internet, then you can save a lot of money.

If you plan to build a upper range machine, it's easy to pony up a million before even considering a monitor. That's why you have to consider what you plan to do with the machine. A Honda Accord is a hell of a lot cheaper than a 4x4 pick-up, but if you plan to haul around washing machines all day, the Honda Accord will do it a hell of a lot slower.

One of my students just picked up a desktop Samsung with the works (including a huge, sweet, flat-panel monitor) for W950,000.

Good analogy Gord. It's also necessary to consider your future needs. Expandability is a big thing for me. I made teh mistake of buying a prepackaged unit and now I am maxed out on what it can do.

This spring I will be going full out on a new system. top end pentium processor and at minimum 1 gig of ram.

yeah, i am looking for as powerful a computer as i can get with a sweet sound card, as i am wanting to make music. and the music software i use eats up quite a lot of memory. but if i'm not saving a lot by building my own, i think i'll just go for a good off-the-shelf deal.
has anyone seen any yamaha sound cards, or the platinum soundblaster card?

I blew about 1.8 million on mine.. But its well over the 2 million mark now. I even brought over my own Hard drives! Smile

But for 1.8 when I got here.. Six months ago I got a

2.4Ghz P4. I wanted a hyperthreading one but I got the wrong one.
Gigabyte Titan Board (sweet ass board for the price)
512 of Kingmax Ram.
Sound Card
Watercooling
Nice Case
Creative Surround Sound

and of course my 18.1" monitor that is also my TV.
But I upgraded my watercooling to an Exos and now its tanked out.

But yeah I would highly recommend finding someone to help you build it and explain how it all slots together as its not as hard awhile ago. It also gives you the option of expanding.. as a previous person said.

Another note.. I just cant stop chucking neons in my machine.. I have three now. The green one is on all the time and it looks like its something the Borg made! Smile

Oh and another thing. The pplz that sell the warez and the porn in the tunnel. I saw them get raided by the cops last monday. It was quite interesting. I think they might be back by now tho! Smile

What is the overclocking / modding scene like in Korea?

Why on earth do you need water cooling with an Intel 2.4 P4? Have you over clocked the board or something? I've got temp probes in my 2.4 set up and the regular fan keeps it just fine- even when playing GTA or Splinter Cell it never gets above 40 C.

The "overclocking scene" is the same as anywhere else.

The modding scene is unlike anything you can possibly imagine. It's a magical land where anything is possible. You can walk around Yongsan and buy all sorts of things to customize your case, or talk to a local blacksmith about phyisically building you a new case without it costing a bazillion dollars.

But I trump you all. My server sits in a PS2 case. Maybe I should add a couple blue neon lights.

If you're spending 500,000 plus on the latest Radeon or gForce video card (more if it's an All-In-Wonder with TV tuner and stuff), you're not gonna get much of a PC out of the other 400,000 you'd have to spend to keep it under a 1,000,000.

I'll be getting one custom-built when this old Model-T jalopy of a box finally bites it.

I've found that over the last 25 years (yes, it's been that long since I bought my first PC - a TRS-80 Model III) the price for a top-end PC has pretty much stayed constant at about 2500-3500 bucks, while the power took leaps forward, of course. I spent 3500 (Australian) for this machine 5 yrs back, almost, and since it was built with absolute top-of-the-line components (bar a processor two notches lower in clockspeed than the current state of the art at the time), it is still quite servicable, and, with the gForce II GTS I bought a 18 months back, can still (at 400 Mhz!) run most of the games coming out these days quite well, if only at 800x600.

Doom III and HLII will kill it though, and the releases of those will be my upgrade trigger.

My advice is to get the best components, rather than the 'fastest' or newest, if you're not planning to be a constant-upgrader.

I'd venture that you could probably get a one-tier-below-ultimate box for about 2 grand these days, which leads me to believe we're approaching the Singularity. Wink

Well for one.. Its super quiet
Two: The exos cools my CPU, Radeon, Chipset, 3 Hard drives and the overall temp doesnt get over 25 degrees. Or up to 30-33 when I stress it.

But fans are gonna be come obsolete im thinking.. and they take up to much friggen room. So just chuck a couple of water jackets in there and bobs your uncle.

Also have waterpipes flow thru your computer looks cool.
