Hi everyone,

Here's the problem:

Recently purchased a new laptop in Canada. It has Windows Vista as the OS.

Have Microsoft Word 2003 installed.

Word document email attachments won't open. The dialogue window opens and the little documents float past, but nothing happens.

I drafted a short letter to myself on Word, saved it, and emailed it to myself as an attachment. Won't open.

Anyone have any ideas? Is this a compatablity issue with Vista?

PM me if you have any ideas. Thanks in advance.

have you tried to save the word attachment file to your desktop first before opening the file?

Yes. Same thing happens. Message window opens, little documents float by, nothing happens.

But what of others who want to send him a file? How will they know to do that?

Maybe the .doc extension isn't associated with Word? Try doing that or even re-installing Word. any security settings? What is your e-mail client? Does this happen in IE or with Firefox as well?

Is it a .docx? That's the new file extension for Vista.

Try this:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

that d/l is for Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003 to be able to open, edit and save in office 2007 file formats. Indytrucks is saving as 2003 and trying to open as 2003.

He saved the attachment to the desktop and still could not open it. So I wanted to make sure it was not file integrity issues ( server side filters, antivirus, other security measures, etc ).

Thanks everyone for the hints.

I had already downloaded the link provided earlier in the thread and nothing changed.

I've now come to discover that I can't open attachements from the email messgae itself (on Yahoo), but if I go into the 'My Attachments' search, I can open them through there. I get a little message that comes up saying the website needs to run a program and will I allow it. I say yes and it opens. I can't figure out how to change the security settings to allow it every time. And Hotmail is a different kettle of fish, as there is no 'My Attachments' search function.

I hate computers.

I would recommend leaving this security feature on. It will prevent any infected files from causing havoc on your computer.

That's what I intend to do. I didn't just splash out for a new laptop to have it infected. I'm just really frustrated as to why the damn attachments don't open.

have you tried using google docs? it's really handy for viewing documents online. you can upload via the site, email or standalone application. People can view all docs without d/l anything or even having office installed. it's also a good backup solution.
