Until recently, I was teaching the Junior EduTimes at my hagwon--an absolute abomination of a newspaper (made for ESL teaching) that I'm done with. I can get past the countless grammatical errors, but the subject matter is absolute garbage as well (e.g., Male vs. Female Doctors--where the pros for men are that they're smarter and more respected in the community, and the pros for women being that she's like your mother and will listen to your problems). You can't teach students English with material created by people who barely have a grasp of the language themselves.

Anyways, my director and I are going to have a talk about it tomorrow, so I just thought I'd see if anyone had any suggestions on better news-related materials, so that I can go in with some ideas on what we could replace the paper with.

Thanks in advance for any of your help.

Print off and then photocopy stories from Internet news sources.

For example, the "Heath Ledger, 28, dead" story. Throw with it more manageable activity-based stuff: printing off movie jackets of films he's been in then doing a lesson/review about kinds of movies, perhaps discussing about famous people they know who died relatively young, etc.

As well, I like to take a Korean newspaper from the office and I tell my students I don't know hangeul so they have to explain news story pictures, advertisements, etc. Once a month I have several classes tear apart a Korean language newspaper looking for pictures and ads to write English sentences about, to describe.

Yonhap online news service has very short feature and sports stories I've found quite useful, at least as a starting point to build a lesson from.

Don't get too tied to text. Start with it and then plan activities away from it.

Thanks Robot and VanIslander--both ideas are far better than the EduTimes.
