With the launch of SP1 Microsoft promised to put an end to two popular hacks used by pirates to allow a non-genuine install of Windows Vista to function in the same way as a genuine install. Testing that Ive carried out in the lab today suggests that Microsoft has been true to its word.

Microsoft shuts the door on Vista piratesThe two most common hacks used were the OEM BIOS hack and the grace timer hack (of which there were two flavors which were widespread).

Testing both these methods of circumventing Windows activation and Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) has shown me that SP1 effectively ignores both these hacks. Systems that previously were shown to be genuine prior to the installation of SP1 then require activation - and if the system isnt activated it is marked at non-genuine and enters the nag state.

I wonder if this is effects the hack that allows you to circumvent the full purchase of vista as well. As I understand it, you could purchase the upgrade, which is much cheaper, and make demo install work somehow, bypass the need to get the full version.

Give it a day or two. I wonder if the OEM thing still works.

the consequences of pirated software is not nearly as severe and limiting as it was before - SP1 changes from reduced funtionality to nagware

As far as I remember, the SP1 and SP2 packages for XP didn't have to be downloaded to keep a computer running. Any critical updates still came in through automatic updates.

I wonder if this Vista SP1 is the same? Is it really essential to install it?

As with XP, soon programs will probably require the presence of SP1. Many programs for XP specifically state that SP2 is necessary for operation.
