I was told by my boss that I need a new account. They won't deposit my pay into my KB account. It has to be Shinhan. And no, it's not that scam crap. I hold onto it. They deposit the money in.

Anyways, I went to Shinban bank near my home. I fill out the forms while the secuirty type guy helps me. He said something about no cash card. I told him I have a marriage visa and I've been here 5 years, so not true. He said 'I'm not sure'. Whatever.

So I got to the teller and she also repeated that, that as a foreigner, I am not eligible for a card for 3 months. My wife asked why, and she said they have to monitor my transactions for 3 months and then I could get a card. She asked why again, and gont some xenophobic response. But not the girl's fault. Korean law fault.

I told her that I have a marriage visa, a bank account with KB for the last 3 years, and I've been here almost 5. Nope. Not good enough. Still can't have a cash card for 3 months.

Korea extra sparkling!!

I guess your boss needs to get used to KB.

BTW, don't try to get a mortgage.

From the title of the thread, I thought that some previously untapped sparkle source had been discovered.

Tell the bank that you work in the sparkle mines...Maybe that will get you somewhere.

Nah, I got the Shinhan account. I said right in front of the teller (to my wife, in Korean), 'I'll just take out my salary monthly and put it in my other account.'

Ilsanman . It's not Korea thats eating you . After 4 years in Thailand , most peoples idea of heaven , I could not stomach a thing about the place . Everything and everyone annoyed me .

Of course the problem didn't lie with Thailand...it was just time for me to move on . Years later that is clear as day to me and I miss Thailand .

*wink

That's interesting because I too, had to get an account with that bank last year when I got this job at my company. Unlike you, I had my assistant come with me. My assistant did all the talking, and I was given the check card without any problems. I got the atm card with the visa logo on it and was told I could use it anytime. I work for a pretty well known company, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it. Like you, I've been married for 9 years and have the F visa. Dunno why they didn't give you the debit card.

Wasn't there are thread about this exact subject a few months ago? I believe there was a 2 part waiting period for foreigners. 3 months after arrival in Korea to open a bank account, and then 3 months to get your atm card.

Of course, the usual suspects claimed that these new rules applied to Koreans as well.

What was the expression on the teller's face after you announced that bit of news in front of her?

Thanks for the post.

Good memory; indeed there was: Korean Banks *Sparkling*

Here's my story in a nutshell:
Quote:
Aware that in Korea the left hand often doesn't know what the right hand is doing, I thought I'd give my Bank Card Quest another shot by going to another Shinhan branch. This time I went to the branch in the Dongyang Securities Building, exit 3 of Yeouido station.

Sure enough I got a card which is not only an ATM card but also a check card. It's even a credit card, but without any credit: I can use it for internet purchases because it has a visa logo on it with an expiry date and all that, but the money will instead be withdrawn from my account. I just asked for a basic ATM card and am pleasantly surprised.

How are you supposed to have transactions for 3 months without any card to create transactions?

Or were they just saying you'd get an ATM card only?

I'm thinking, over 3 months, it goes something like this:

Deposit/Withdrawal
Deposit/Withdrawal
Deposit/Wthdrawal

OK, sir, here's your card-uh.

NO, I work for a famous hagwon. This will be a personal account. None of that tax fraud crap.

Yes, there was a thread about this before, but the difference is they treated me like a backpacker off the plane, regardless of my marriage visa and 5 years of living here. Therefore, more sparkling than expected.
