|
I am a member of Woori Bank, as I have been since October of 2005...
I recently had a cable Internet connection installed in my apartment. The cable company asked for my banking account number so that they could have the monthly payments withdrawn from my account.
The bank refused to even deal with this method of payment towards the cable company, and they informed my employer so. I asked my employer if it was because I am a foreigner and she says yes.
What? The money I earn here isn't acceptable to pay a cable bill?
My my, that's so fucking racist it's not even funny.
Why are Koreans so funny with money, and downright racist? It's racist to say "we can't accept this account number because he is a foreigner." How Xenophobic can you get? Don't tell me that your computer system can't calculate a name that isn't in HanGul format and exceeds three syllables..
I am calling BS on this because I have payed parking tickets this way as well as sent people money via account wire transfer from my local Woori ATM.
I'm paying the bill no matter what, except now, I have to wait until the bill comes in the mail, then take it to the bank, wait for god knows how long in line, just to show them a bill and my passport, then have them stamp my passport (my passport has so many stamps from Woori it's not even funny, I will have to apply for new pages soon because of this) and then the banking representative will panic and freak out and summon the branch manager then they will argue with each other in front of me for 20 minutes to figure out if my money is legit or not. Happens every time.
I have never seen such a display of pure ignorance and stupidity in my life. |

Why does the bank stamp your passport when you pay a bill?
How much is your cable bill?
Did they take it upon themselves to tell your employer about the bill, or did you get the employer involved?
You need to get a new bank!
I have my KT bill automatically paid every month. No problems now. At first there was a small problem because I've had my bank account (KEB) a LONG time and the ARC number associated with it was not my current ARC number. Just updated my info at the bank.
You don't go away for long vacations, do you? |

I don't know why they stamp my passport. They also stamp it whenever I wire money back to my bank account in the States.
The Internet service was set up through my employer. My employer told me they needed to give my account number to the cable company, I said no problem, and then my employer told me there was a problem, basically boiling down to "they won't allow you to have money withdrawn from your account, because you are not Korean..."
WTF?
Yes, I need to open a bank account elsewhere and no, I don't go away for long vacations, but what does that have to do with anything? Vacations are expensive and I am here to save money. |

I bank at Nonghyup in Andong. They used to always want to look at my passport, but never stamped it, when I sent money home. Now they don't even look at it.
They have NEVER asked for anything from me when I hand them a bill and the cash to pay it. |

Jacob, 2 words... Internet banking.
It's convenient and fast... and what's more, you can have it though - YES, they do allow foreigners to have internet banking.. isn't that amazing!
All you need to do is to take your passbook to your bank and ask for internet -uh benking and they will get you to fill out a form (in Korean, but they will help you), sign it... and then they will type up some stuff on their puter and a few minutes later, they will give you a security card.
Then when you get home, go to their website and select English.. and they will take you through it. It is really simple. I've been using it now for 4 years and it's such a big time saver. |

Sometimes all you need to do is try another branch.
Maybe Woori has claimed independence from Korea and when ever you enter their bank you need a passport as you are walking on waygook soil. |

They don't have to stamp your passport when wiring money if you show proof that you earned it legitimately. Just bring in paystubs that equal the amount of money you are sending each time. They'll make a copy of the paystub and hand the original back to you.
A lot of the tellers don't have a lot of experience dealing with foreigners so they think they have to stamp the passport everytime. If you give them the paystubs and show your ARC and they still want to stamp the passport, tell them, "NO." |

I discovered the problem with my old ARC number when I set up auto bill pay on my KT account because I was going to the US for the summer. |

So can you send money to an American bank account by using internet banking associated with a Korean bank account? Do you need to open a special account... foreign remittance or something?
thank you |

Why would any foreigner bank with a bank owned by the Korean government? |
