Hi, I read an earlier post that Summer Camps are usually avail. every Summer. I'm sorry if there is a post about this, I didn't see it/find it. I don't really know much about summer camps so I'm sorry if these questions sound stupid.

Has anyone ever taught at a camp before? How do summer camps work? When do they usually start/end? What places have summer camps? Do they only recruit in May, not any earlier? Do they provide an airplane ticket/housing?

To teach at a summer camp do you need an e-2 visa? I am still a student in college so i do not qualify for the e-2 visa. What kind of visa would I need to get?

Any information would be awesome. Thanks again.

You could get a C4 visa. Problem is that you then get much higher taxes, maybe about 20%.

C4 is a s.h.o.r.t. term work visa (less than 90 days) but you still couldn't LEGALLY work at a camp.

The qualifications to get a C4 as a camp teacher are the same as an E2 for LEGAL English camp teachers.

The taxes are 27% and the pay is about 1 million per week for a camp. They don't usually include airfare but they do include housing (you bunk with the kids or in a dorm). You may find a camp that will front the airfare but you can expect a salary of about 1 million for a 4 week camp if they do.

You COULD attempt a H1 working tourist visa (which would allow you to work as a camp assistant - legal loophole around the teacher in camp thing) if you are from a country that has a treaty with Korea. This would also put you into the 3.3% tax bracket instead of the non-resident 27%.

Does anyone have any ideas when summer camps start recruiting?

my contract finishes in July, so the perfect time to pick up some extra cash by working on a camp over the summer - I have a current E2 and am in the process of getting my paperwork in order so hopefully I'd be able to sort it out without having to go back home.

Typically, recruiting is in May/June and they run from the last week of July through the end of August.

Perfect timing for me then - that's exactly what I'm looking for!
I just wish they'd recruit sooner so I can get my plans sorted out!

So just to confirm this - most summer camp workers are on an E2 visa?

E1/E2 with the note from immigration (usually older PS teachers who still get full holidays or unigwan teachers), F2, F4, F5, then there are the E2s who do it illegally without the note from immigration or illegal workers on a tourist stamp.

About 100 get busted each year for working without authorization and probably that many or a few more get screwed out of their pay because they were illegal and have no way to complain when the directors disappear on the last day of camp when the kids are getting sent home and no-one is left to pay the staff off.

ttompatz,

I am curious if you know about how this would pan out...

Hypothetically...

If I go to Korea on an E-2 Visa for a summer camp, then I am under contract only from July to late August.

I would obviously get my E-2 visa here in Canada before going to Korea... but what would be my situation in Korea after the summer camp?

Is my VISA only good for 1 month?

Could I find a job in July/August and then do a Japan visa run to reapply for setting up my next contract?

Is there any way I would be allowed to just go to Immigration with a new contract without having to change the visa since I was only there 1 month?

Can you tell me if / where I have errors in the process?

Thanks

You would get a C4 visa for the camp and then have to get an E2 for your next job - with a visa run in between.

You will need a full set of documents (certified by the Korean consulate for your region in Canada) for the camp visa and ANOTHER full set for the E2 application (transcripts, diploma, CRC, etc).

Better bring triplicate copies of everything.
