so grad week is coming up for those in public schools, and i was wondering what lessons people have planned for the week?

also some people have said that we don't need to worry about the MS 3rd grade because they'll be busy with grad stuff, is that true for all schools?

My supervising co-teacher, the one who tells me about things like this, will be returning from her overseas holiday tomorrow night. And, of course, I have a class 1st hour Monday morning. High entertainment is in store, no doubt!

I swear I'm going to buy a box of those sparkles and start tossing a few in the air every time some "Korean planning" occurs. I wonder how long it'll take before I won't be able to see the floor.

I have to physically be at the school Wednesday through Friday, but I was told to use the time for "planning," i.e. I won't have any classes. You know, I think it's a good idea to spend the time at work to actually do some work! Very Happy

If I did have to teach though, I'd bring in a few movies geared at the age group you're teaching, with Korean subtitles. Just don't show the same movie to every class. I learned that last semester when I had to watch "Cool Runnings" 12 times!

You might also want to check out "Extra English," a video series available on esnips. You can also get the workbook there, if you need to legitimize what you're doing to the higher-ups...but then you could also make some "gimme" worksheets based on whatever movie you're watching: "Who is the main character?' "Write 10 new words you learned from the movie," etc.

I've been concerned about this, too. I teach 1st and 3rd grade middle schoolers only, and I don't know if we should just play a game or what. They watch so many movies in their other classes that I am hesitant to do the same.

If anyone has any end of the year game ideas, please share!

Lessons?

I don't plan any English lessons for graduation week. It is a big waste of time. Just let the kids relax and watch cartoons or play a fun game.

I don't have a working TV in the room, so movies, videos, music, and internet stuff isn't an option in class.

I haven't decided what I'm going to do, and of course I haven't been told if I will actually have class. There's a game called "Typhoon" that I hear is really popular, so I may look into that. I'd also like to just give them free time, but I don't know if the coteachers will like that.

If I do have a real class, I'll probably do this low-prep, low-activity: it's a good time killer, the students seem to like it, and it's a little educational. Break the class into groups of 4 or 5. GIve each group a sheet with all the letters of the alphabet. Have the group come up with English-in-Korean words for each letter. I don't allow company names, but other than that I'm not too picky. I let them use Konglish and romanized English. Apartment, alcohol, bus, channel, etc. There are hundreds if not thousands. I explain the activity for a few minutes, then give the kids 15-20 minutes to come up with the words. I have them just do a maximum of 5 per letter, since I'll have to count words for points and don't have time to go through hundreds of words. I do one point for each word and an extra point for each word spelled right. Then, I'll have the groups secretly choose one word per letter that they think is unique, and that the other groups don't have, and we'll go around the room and they'll get another point for that. It encourages them to thnk a little and be creative, and list words like b-boy and balcony rather than bus and banana. The winning team gets candy or something. I normally don't give candy to students, so it's a little treat for them. So warm-up and let the kids get in the room for 5-10 minutes, do the game for 15-20, spend 5 minutes tallying the points, 5 minutes counting unique words, and free time for the remainder.

I've got a normal week of teaching at my HS although, the students didn't seem to be particulary interested last week and I am expecting another week of low participation this week. I think that they think that they should be tossing about watching dvds or something.

I came back from vacation for this.

Why could they not have been nice and given me one more week off and let me rest.

Wicked jetlag and odd body movements.

Thank Fark for the Wombles DVD I brought back with me.

I'm with you on that Nomad. As of next week I'm going to be sitting here in an empty school for 10 days, twiddling my thumbs, drinking too much coffee, re-arranging my desk numerous times - and probably reading pages and pages of old topics on Daves. Rolling Eyes

Does anyone have some good time filling suggestions?

with my lesson planning almost done for march, i divide my obscene amounts of free time between: dave's, facebook (yeah, i know), google video (good for finding movies over a bunch of different sites), and studying online. sometimes i just sleep too
