just wondering, how long is one public school class (elementary or middle school)? as far as teacher talking time, is it generally 50/50 foreign teacher/korean teacher?

40 min, The ratio will be different depending on your co-teacher. Mine let's me teach most of it and jumps in to explain something difficult or to focus the students.

Same here. But depends from school to school. I get to plan and teach all my 18 lessons (40 mins) my co-teachers do just that. Co-teach. So if want a bit of clarification or pulling the ear of a misbehaving students they do help with that.

Other native teachers in my city, are only allowed to co-teach. Other than that they have to teach from the text book. Crying or Very sad

The trick if you want to do all your own teaching is to start confidently and they'll see you are capable and leave you with it. This suits me just fine.

i believe most ele schools are 40m, MS 45m, and HS 50m. this may differ slightly from province to province, but overall, not a long time in the classroom at all

Yeah, not a long time in the classroom. Especially if you have well prepared lessons.

The pub school contracts state 22 hours. Is this 22 hours (i.e. 22x60 minutes which equates to 33 classes at elementary level) or 22 classes? Or is it up to your principals discretion?

In PS, 22 hours = 22 classes.

But in hagwons, they may have different interpretation so must get it clarified before signing your life away. Razz

if elem=40mins, wouldn't that be ideal if you want the lightest workload/lowest classroom teaching time? or is there more prep time involved?

(22 hrs max in contract, elem/middle school is not specified)

It takes a lot of energy and effort to teach any grade effectively. However, I think it takes the most out of you when you teach elementary.

i agree with that, that's the reason why i chose to teach MS. but at the same time, i know a couple ES foreign teachers over here and they do a lot less planning than i do for my classes, plus the korean teachers are more involved in class at their schools (due to the age of the kids). this may not be the norm, just saying what i've heard from my ES friends
