Definitely a question for the geek-together, but since I don't know a lot about WHERE to buy everything in Korea and I'm not sure I can carry it all away in one go, seems like it deserves some forethought. I haven't had much luck buying systems off the shelf so building seems the way to go.

The screen and the case will be the heaviest so I guess I could get those prior...but I'm not sure if Yongsan is my best choice for one-stop shopping. I'd rather just get them beforehand so my back doesn't give out during the meet.

I'm guessing anywhere from 70-100 for the case...anyone want to suggest some manufacturers?

Monitor? BenQ, TopSync, and ViewSonic are good...but should I get it at Yongsan or somewhere else? There's just too many damn choices and I just don't trust internet shopping, although I know that my wife will push for that. Should I consider any Korean brands out of loyalty or an interest in saving money? Seems like 400,000 for 22-24 in. screen is a good amount to budget. Buit-in speakers...no way. THIS looks totally sweet and comes highly recommended: BenQ G2400W Black 24" 5ms DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 250 cd/m2 1000 (can I get it here?) Saw it on New Egg...so cool. Seems the best my money can buy.

Zalman power source (600 w...or higher?) and a Zalman processing cooler . About 115,000 and 60,000 respectively.

MOBO: Gigabyte GA P35R 125,000...but I know this depends on the processor I go with so if you know of one that provides good stability with the processor that would be great.

RAM: 3 sticks of DDR2, 30 thou ea: 60,000

Duo vs. Quad? Discuss.

Sound card? Just for gaming and movies, nothing more.

Hard-drive and DVD/CD 40,000 ea.

Speakers? I have some Britz speakers right now but I wonder if I should stay with these or consider getting some others.

I really like games like Half-life 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (Clear Skies is coming too), and although Crysis sucks it's a good barometer for how well a system performs. Which processor do I go with that's going to tide me over well enough for the next three or four years? Is the Q9450 available in Korea? Aside from obvious cost issues...which is best? E6750? Q6600? Q9300? Kinda wanna future-proof my next investment as best as my sad little budget can.

I'd just like some advice to serve as a basis for the homework I need to do.

For me, the CPU choice is between the Q6600 and E6750. I don't see any point in paying 80,000 more for an E6850 when an E6750 can overclock so well.
A Q6600 will show it's worth fairly soon when the new games come out ready to utilise multi-core.

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (116,000) and have no problems with it. One drawback is if you use a camcorder. There's no Firewire built in. You'll have to add a little firewire card like I did. Any Gigabyte-P35-DS3* would be a good choice. As would any P35 Abit, MSI motherboard.

I think Asus stuff is overpriced.

I'd agree with Spliff on the PSU (no brainer) and the RAM........it's time to start buying RAM in 2x2GB modules.

I'm really happy with my ATI HD3870. I don't think there's a better buy at the moment. The 8800GT's are great. 10% better performance than the 3870 but usually at least 10% more money. One reason I like the 3870 a lot is the dual-slot design found on many models. The hot air from the card is vented outside your PC. Very elegant. Something which will keep your temps down a lot during intensive gaming sessions. I'm all for dual-slot cards.

If I was buying a monitor it would be 24'' widescreen. Don't know much about LCD's. Contrast ratio high....response time low! That's all I know!

HDD's? The Samsung Spinpoint range get good reviews. I like Western Digital drives these days. Quieter than Seagate anyway.

Browse around www.newegg.com
A lot of idiots post on there in the users reviews, but it can give a you a good general idea of models and prices.

I built this computer for 1.8 six weeks ago, but it would have been only 1.5 if I had gotten a single monitor rather than two 22".

the design on the 3870 seems like something othermanufacturers wouldbe tripping over themselves to copy. effin cool.
What about the BenQ? One comment on New Egg claims it's ideal for FPS...of course the same guy then added "vote Huckabee"" in his sig so....

People on other forums rave about the BenQ compared to Samsung, HP, Acer, and several others saying this one is ideal for gamers. The price has me a little worried as it can be anywhere from 400 to 600 depending on where you live...so how much is it in Korea? I'll get my wife to check but I wonder if anyone has a retailer with the nice prices...the idea of competitive pricing in Korea hasn't really caught on yet but I still have my hopes.

Looks like the standard price in Yongsan for the BenQ 24'' is 417,000. The cheapest 24incher I would buy is around 350,000, so maybe it's worth another 70,000 to buy the benQ and be sure of a quality monitor.

Are there other manufacturers that are making video cards with their own venting? That one looks sweet for now, but something a generation or two above what I'm playing now would be idea in respect to forward compatability. I don't just want to run games that operate on the level of Crysis but also games that will follow.

The 3870 is cool, but the dual slots and venting make me wonder if I'll need a specialized case to accomodate it?

Is the 8800 even available in Korea? Which model? Which manucturer would be best to stay ahead of everything being released later this year?

As far as PSUs go, would the 600 watt model be cutting it too close? I don't mind going all Tim Allen (in respect to power, not sniffing coke) on it if it means that I'll be able to upgrade without having to buy a new PSU each time. One person advised 600 watts would be the baseline, leaving a thin margin for any additional demands.

It takes up two slots. But no problem if you're only running one card.

8800

If I had to buy a new card right now I'd probably look at the NVidia 8800GTS 512MB G92 series.

Nvidia just seems to have ATI beat right now in cards as far as I can tell.
