| I hear you do not have to tip for taxis and restaurants, but what else? |

Don't tip for anything.
Tipping is a fucking stupid custom and one of umpteen reasons I don't move back home. |

| The only thing is small change for taxi's. If the bill is 4500 and you give them 5000 it's customary not to bother with the small change and the taxi drivers take it without being forced to have it back. |

it cost 2500 won for a taxi ride to my place from the middle of town and I almost always give 3000 won and don't wait for the change
taxi drivers downtown (small town) trip over themselves to be the one to give me a ride
500 won to Koreans is a lot, to me 50 cents |

a tip jar at the bar is all you'll probably encounter.
and at the room salon, but that's a whole different kind of thread |

I call bollocks on "customary". In more than a decade, I've never even seen Koreans do this. |

This OP stinks of cultural superiority and seems ready to condemn all of us for not tipping.

OK, no problem. What I was saying was that it's more difficult to tip taxi drivers because especially where I am they don't take tips. But if there is up to 900 won in change they will, when insisted upon by me, take it without trying to give back. I used the word customary because if you try it they'll take the money, because it's small change, and as such pretty insignificant. |

| Cheapskates don't tip, the rest do. If you want to hold up traffic and wait while the taxi driver digs around in his change purse for 200 won, that's just what you are- a cheapskate. |

I agree 100% with this. Tipping is bloody stupid. If businesses paid their employees well enough then we wouldn't be conned into tipping. The argument about better service is bullshit. if someone gives crappy service you fire them and hire someone else.
Tipping is just plain and simple stupid.
and before anyone says "you never worked in restaurants so you don't understand" you're wrong. I worked in restaurants for years and still feel that tipping is stupid.
I'm happy that Korea has no tipping and that the service I get here is equal to what i got back in Canada when I went back in August for vacation. At least here I know how much it costs by looking at the listed prices.
Tipping is stupid. |
