so great that people want to leave...

Emigration Packages Called Swindles
by Ahn Seok-bae ([email protected])

The Canadian province of Manitoba has placed a Seoul-based emigration agency under strict surveillance for a year for fraudulent advertising, the Canada Press said Monday. The company, Emin Time, sold its emigration packages on the Hyundai Home Shopping channel last month, enticing viewers to emigrate to Manitoba.
Steve Ashton, Manitoba's labor and immigration minister, said that the province would no longer do business with Emin Time.

An official from the province said Emin Time advertised that people could easily and quickly move to Canada through Manitobas authorized immigration program, prompting more than 4,000 applicants to spend $75 million on the packages. The problem was that Emin Time said that the applicants did not need fluent English skills, strong academic backgrounds or employment contracts for full-time jobs, while Manitoba does require immigrants to have a certain level of work experience and English ability.

So, where is all this korean pride, culture and family values we hear about all the time!? I mean if it were so great of a place to live, why would no many want to leave? And yet 4000 wanting to leave korea!!! Can you imagine if all the Canadian provinces had a similar policy.... half of Canada would be little korea!

That agency is just the tip of the iceberg for "agencies" here. One of my students was taken for 4000$ by an agency that promised to get her a work visa/job in the US for a year. After many months of stalling, she tried to get her money back only to discover the phone was no longer in service and the office had packed up and disappeared overnight.

There is a very large meat-packing plant in Brandon MA that is always looking for workers, and word from relatives there is that more and more Koreans are moving to Brandon. One Korean guy and his Japanese wife have recently set up a language school there (not the study-abroad hagwon for rich Korean kids, but an adult night school teaching English to immigrants and Japanese and Korean to U of M-Brandon students and anyone else interested); with the influx of new immigrants there is a definte demand for an English night-school for adults as the govt. sponsored ESL programs are daytime only (many of the meat-packing employees are from Latin America and are signing up).

As far as I'm concerned- Brandon (or Winnipeg even)- they're welcome to it!

[But if you're from MA and thinking of what to do after Korea- there may just be teaching positions in Brandon for you in the future...]

Zuh? While English fluency and work experience are factored into the equation, they are not sole decisive factors that must be met.

Plus last I checked, Immigration was a federal matter (with the exception of Quebec to prevent it being overrun with non-French speakers). I don't believe that Manitoba holds any sort of veto that says "sorry, you can't move here" particularly since you don't have to notify the government before you move.

What I think they meant to refer to was the Nominee programs Manitoba offers further Immigration options should a person not meet Federal minimum's but do in fact have a skill that Manitoba requires.

Even a quick read through Manitoba's immigration page at http://www.gov.mb.ca/labour/immigrate/immigration/1.html says nothing about further restrictions beyond the Federal rules.

More than 4000 families move away from Canada a year, but I wouldn't stand up and scream that Canada is a horrible place that legions are fleeing from for some reason. People do immigrate all the time for many reasons. You're burning a scarecrow here and not saying anything of value.
