There seems to some people (parents not teachers) having their troublesome youth where sandwhich board, hold signs, and wear t-shirts with self depricating comments ("I disrespected my teacher" "I've been suspended 7 times").

There's a video at yahoo.ca on the front page.

I like it...not the best way. But a good desperate measure. Why not teach some kids a bit o humity?

Experts shmeckspurts.

Sometimes I want to send some kids home with "I'm wasting my mother's money" written on their foreheads.

In Taiwan, I hit students with squeaky hammers and sent them to other rooms to spell their names with their butts.

In fact, I actually grappled with students to enforce this rule (middle school boys). This was all accepted within Taiwanese culture and within the auspices of the school. I made a girl cry by punishing her that way (no grappling, but humiliation).

I studied German as a 14-year-old and enjoyed it a lot. I'm not sure that i would have if someone had made me spell my German name (Fritz) befiore the rest of the class.

On the other hand, I would have enjoyed more of the "get out of your seat and do it" communicative experiences.

I still feel bad about what I did back then. It wasn't wrong in their culture, but it was wrong based on mine.

A safe, constructive language classroom should respect both your and your students' cultures.

That's good advice.

You probably won't overly punish students by your own cultural standards, but it's easy to stray into their own and, for lack of a better word, indulge.

Find out what is and is not embarrassing for your students, and remember that each carries a fragile vase called self-esteem.

Even if you're only in it for the money, earn that money without breaking the vase.

Your post doesn't belong in CE, but I enjoyed it being here.

NM...it's not a TEACHER/teaching issue, it's a PARENT issue.
