Okay, apparently in reading the other threads I realize this is a question I should have been asking before.

"E & J Recruiting, does anyone know about this company?"

So far, things seem fine with the girl I'm dealing with. However, with my luck I'm going to get 10 people posting telling me that there are problems with this recruiter.

In fact... that would be lucky since I'd finally know something before it happened to me. haha

Anyways, I'm thinking the only negative thing that I can see is the fact it's Monday to Saturday and 5-11pm. Terrible hours, but for me I don't mind actually.

Thanks in advance

Any work after 10 pm at night is officially night rates at time and a half - have you been told this?

No I wasn't told that.

But also it was a monthly salary, so I'm not sure if that type of thing counts then.

If I'm on salary there is technically no hourly rate right? Unless I just divide through the salary by the hours, but obviously if they wanted to they'd just lower the hourly rate by the correct percentage to allow for the increase in the nightly shift premium.

However, great to know about that law regarding overtime. Thanks.

This recruiter doesn't show up on the lists I've read about that have crooked operations, so possibly it's legit.

hehe

Maybe this is a recruiter of a bad job, as opposed to a bad recruiter.

(Edited due to typo)

Most contracts are for 120 hours a month. Even thought they write 30 hours a week in a contract sometimes you may work 35 hours one week and 25 another week. As long as you dont go over 40 hours in one week{ when overtime rates would apply } or 120 hours a month { when overtime rates will apply} then everyhing is OK
BUT no matter what the total hours you do for the month any hours done after 10pm at night are at overtime rates. Some hagwons may bend the rules a little and have you finish at 10.30pm but 11pm is a bit too much. This law was brought in to stop hagwons operating through the night.
Why not ask your recruiter to check the Korean employment laws for you? or ask to communicate directly with the school why the school operates so late?

I was wondering the same question the OP had.

I contacted the recruiter (E & J Recruiting, yet I believe I've seen them posting under a different recruiter name as well) and they say they can't provide the name of the school (they claim it is a large privately owned company with a total of about 10000 students across their many branches) -- is that normal for a recruiter to not be willing to give a name out?

Here is the job listing under the name "EDK Partners"

Since the added value of a recruiter is close to Zero they prefer to keep you in the dark until you sign, so that you do not contact the Hagwon directly and whisk their fee away.

Sorry, I do not have any information about this company.

The school is probably an Ipshi Hogwon.

By the way, I've been looking for a work schedule in Korea like that one for years. I'd even do the Saturday classes of the pay was alright, too.

Do you like to stay up late?

I've actually found a good amount of schools that are hiring for positions usually around 2pm-9pm/3pm-9pm/3pm-10pm. If you look harder you'd probably find them.

For me, I'm trying to get something later in the day because I'm planning on attending classes earlier in the day. I ended up declining E & J because although what details they offered did seem attractive, I'd rather make less and have a life rather than make more and not have a life. Chances are I'll probably get a part-time job to break even with expenses and then do tutoring gigs (legally, of course) if I need more cash flow.

Oh and Juregen, thanks for the pointer -- definitely makes sense.

I spoke to the recruiter and she said that the school wants the employee to show up 30 minutes prior to the shift starting.

However, that 30 minutes is to read over the notes and books and material the school provides for teaching the students. Apparently there is no other prep work required, and there will be several classes learning the same thing.

Lots of teaching hours, but the pay is fair and there is no prep time. In my opinion the situation is worth considering.

Now, if I can just find out about how the taxes go, and whether or not I would actually be charged the 30% foreigner tax I've read about.
