So about ten minutes ago, my boss hands me this piece of paper from the governement telling me that since I didn't spend a lot of money in 2007... How they know or don't know this is beyond me, maybe they're going by credit cards?... that I owe the government 300,000won.

Well, that's what I've been told. I got a photocopy of the form and I'm going to run it by a friend I trust to see what the deal is.

Even if it is legit, it's still bull-dookie since I wasn't offered the opportunity to do my Korean tax returns myself.

The boss is lying, never heard of such ridiculous lies in my life. They have to come up with new ways to mess with the teachers c'mon, the least they could do is have some idiotic story that is more creative than that...lol

Could it be that whoever has done your tax return form on your behalf hasn't entered the deductions that everyone usually gets. Or your boss didn't pay your tax all year and is now paying it up from your pocket. Sounds like you could be getting double-taxed.

TWG:

Thanks for the post.

Let's hope this is not some new thing to worry about and good luck getting it straightened out.

You should be taxed more as you haven't paid enough.

That's what I'm concerned about. I'll get it figured out with my friend tomorrow

I heard a similar story. I got a tax refund and was told it was due to my bank balance and how much I have spent.

I'll take it. It was 350,000 Won.

I have been here 4 years. Am I supposed to file income tax? Are US citizens exempt from filing korean income tax? I only file for US income tax. Question

I think because I am married and we claim as a household rather than a foreign temporary employee I pay more ... I think... I think you should be in the clear. To be honest though, the local education office doesn't deduct taxes until the end of the year. If I had a child I would be getting a return for sure.

My friend, who does this sort of thing every year as part of her job, told me that they didn't include my tax exemption due to being a foreign national. If they did it right, I'd be owed money instead of the other way around

The payment is due Monday. Due to the holidays I just sent an email to my boss telling her to get it straightened out by the end of office hours on Monday or pay the money themselves, because I'm not paying for their screw ups.

The topic of them doing my taxes for me without my knowledge or consent is another problem.

AND on top of that, it was pointed out to me that they haven't given me my yearly pension statements.

I'm going to be yelling a lot in the near furture. Mostly at myself for not staying on top of these things in an half-assed industry run by scammers and cheats.
