For all you Australians applying for your criminal background checks be warned that either the Australian Federal Police or the Australian Postal Service can be rather lax about sending you the criminal check document. I have been waiting a month and a half for my criminal background check to come in the mail to Seoul. After waiting the first three weeks I contacted the federal police in the ACT and was told that my document was send around the 3rd of January, but must have been lost on the way so they agreed to send another one to my family in Brisbane (so they could send it on to me ASAP with apostille). Well here we are in the seond week of Feb and my family still hasn't received anything. I have complained again to the Federal Police over the phone and they said it must be something to do with the slow postal system! Mail from the ACT to Brisbane is supposed to take 3-4 days not two weeks. Anyway, they have decided to send another one (how thoughtful of them!) rather than investigate into this and I'm left feeling livid about this bungle! The Federal Police should provide a registered, express delivery postal service like other government departments so important documents actually make it to recipients rather then rely on unreliable snail mail.
On a more positive note, I went to immigration here in Seoul today as I'm changing universities and the immigration official told me that because the processing time of my new work visa will be completed before March 15th, I won't even need to submit a criminal background check until I renew my visa in 2009! This is the first I've heard of this. Anyone else out there who has been told a similar claim by an immigration official recently? |

Yes, anybody who as already completed more than 10 months of their contract needn't submit a criminal record check when changing employers. |

Its the korean mail at fault. I've had so much stuff simply not arrive in korea- including my national criminal check (2 months overdue now). My guess is they are allergic to foreign mail.
This is one reason the new regulations will bar many from Korea- only half the documents actually get delivered on time, (if at all). |
