My fianc asks me the meaning of certain words from her English text books. Some times I wonder why she is learning words Ive never heard before. I understand the vastness of English vocabulary, but you would think I would have come across these words before. So are ESL students being taught vocabulary that is irrelevant in the English language?

Yes, Im opening myself up for insults regarding my intelligence. Razz

So let me know how many of these words you know the menaing of.

Phlegmatic
Vacillate
Austere
Aver
Lithe
Parvenu
Arrant
Mecum
Prevaricate
Plenary

Sorry the numbers went our of order, editing polls are troublesome.

I don't know the above three words, the rest of them seem pretty basic if slightly uncommmon to me.

Then maybe you spend too much time prevaricating.

I started a long thread about words I've caught my students using that seem inappropriate. It makes no sense learning these insane words because they won't help you communicate with anyone.

I wouldn't suggest learning them to students, but I also think that most educated native speakers would know the 7 words I said that I know.
