Does anyone know when they are? I have a wedding to go to begining of Aug, and I will need time off work, but I haven't told recruiters this, obviously.

I'm hoping the holidays land on Aug 9th weekend....

Unfortunately not there's a holiday on August 15th.

Others include

Jan 1st
Feb 6,7,8
Mar 1
May 5,12
June 6
Aug 15
Sep 13,14,15
Oct 3
Dec 25

That's 13 in total. England the tight monkeys only have 9. Even less than America who've got 10. Sweden has 12. Korea Sparkling when it come to bank holidays.

Depends what it says in your contract. Are you PS or Hagwon? If you're working at a Hogwan then it'll be at the owners disrection.

Actually just re-reading I assume you're at a PS. I'm certain that the first few weeks in August are holidays. Bar any summer camps that you are expected to work in. Term should finish towards the end of July. Then it's 3/4 weeks. I think that the 9th should be safe. I'm gonna head over to Beijing to watch a couple of the events at the Olympics about this time, so was gonna sort out my tickets soon, so I don't miss out.

Buuuuuut,
In the UK, Public Holidays are on the th monday of the month or on the th Friday sometime in the month. There is one or two midweek, if I recall correctly.
If Christmas falls on a Saturday or Sunday, then the holidays for these days are carried forward to the next Monday.

This is where Korea is NOT sparkling.
If Christmas is on Sunday, you get Sunday off, even if you were not due to be working that day anyway Rolling Eyes

Next years PHs are only about 6 days (most fall on weekends), while most jobs will be advertising 13 days to enjoy Korean culture, blah, blah, blah....

What are my chances of getting March 17th off:?: I have an invite for the St Patrick's day reception held by the Irish embassy in Seoul and would really like to go.

You miscounted, thats 14 and July 17 is also a holiday which makes 15 total.

Regarding the public holidays falling on weekends, its a case of "you win some you lose some" The current period (from May 2007) has been good, with March 1 being the only public holiday in a 16month period falling on Weekend. Not to mention both Chuseok and Seollal resulting in 5 day weekends, oh and the bonus day on Dec 19.

However, Chuseok this year will be a bit disapointing with 2 of the 3 holidays falling on the weekend.

On a side note, South Africa has 12 holidays, and if it falls on a Sunday we get monday off (not Sat though).

EDIT: Just googled July 17 and according to Wiki under "former public holidays" - Constitution Day, 제헌절 (制憲節) July 17, from 1949 to 2007
Anyone know why it was discontinued?

To be fair, the Korean teachers and students must be at school two or three Saturdays a month. If the holiday falls on one of those Saturdays, they then get that day off. We foreign "guest teachers" get all Saturdays off during the school year.

Pretty sure they only do a half day every 2 weeks.
Korean teachers also get special holiday of 12 days a year to use for taking half days or leaving early.

My co-teacher uses her special 1 day a month holiday to take the Saturday morning off, every 2 weeks.

I believe this Saturday woking is stopping in the next year or two, but I don't know for sure.

part of the concessions given for the 5 day work week, couple of years ago Arbor Day (April 5) was dropped. I keep hearing Childrens Day is going to be moved permantly to a Sat.

I dont get why when a holiday falls on a weekend you get the preceding fri or the following Monday off like the rest of the world

Just been for dinner with my co-teacher and apparently the government decided that there were too many bank holidays. So they scrapped this one.
He did also say that they toyed with the idea of scrapping Christmas Day instead but apparently the Christians would have gone nuts. And Santa. Personally I can't see the problem with that because it would have meant more presents for fat western kids.

April 18 is a holiday because of Korean parliamentary elections.
