Are malaria tablets needed if you're in the Seoul area? If you're going for a year, surely you can't be taking tablets for malaria every day? I've also heard a mixed fuss about what different shots you need... Although none seem to be necessary, are there any that someone would recommend getting so I can avoid the typical tourist fuss about it Wink

Short answer, no. Every summer, the trucks come around, & spray copious amounts of insecticide around. I used to live right next to the DMZ, btw. DPRK does have malaria. But Mosquitoes don't recognise international borders. Hence the spraying.

This isn't Cambodia.

You don't need that at all. Nor Typhoid or Cholera.

Get the hep shots though. As many as you can.

Before I came here my doctor said that in Seoul, malaria pills aren't necessary since it's such a developed area. He said once I got here, should I decide to spend excess amounts of time in the countryside, or travel to a country where malaria is more prevalent, malaria pills are available in seoul for likely cheaper than they would be at home.

Took his advice, and I'm not dead. Smile

As I stated before, North Korea DOES have malaria. And there are malarial mosquitoes that make their way across the DMZ / border, only to be asphixiated by the constant pesticide spraying every summer in ROK. But malaria south of, & including Seoul? Forget it.
