thanks for the link! I'm actually reading it right now, will have to watch the video after. Not a die hard Objectivist, but I'm a die hard for philosophy. |

Then you might want to know that Rand is neither a competent philosopher nor a competent novelist.
Luckily, there's a long, illustrious history of philosophy--both Eastern and Western--as an antidote for her self-serving justification of greed.

The second part explains the first part nicely. |

Notley comes from a very political family. His father was a revered NDP politician and his sister is running for office in a future election in Edmonton. He's read enough to know it's garbage.
And what's with these pretentious political philosophies with names like "objectivist" or "realist?" Give me a break. |

I don't follow the Rand's philosophy but, I have read her books. The cartoon is simply not accurate. I am wary of those who follow her precepts blindly, as some without proper education do. Her philosophy does provide a framework for single-minded devotion to one's passion, which I find appealing. But, at the same time, those who build corporate empires are nothing without the people who produce and purchase the fruit of their ideas. It's been a while since I've read any of the books however. |

Ah, that is why he didn't understand it. |

This has been said a couple times in this thread, but nobody's shown how. I'm perfectly willing to believe it as I last read Atlas Shrugged about eleven years ago, but not without some evidence.
Either way, though, it's not the only (or even the best) criticism of Rand's "philosophy," it's just a funny one-liner. |

Well, in that cartoon Rand is depicted of having forgot about labour markets (she didn't), innovation and mechanization (not at all, indeed, this is a sure sign the cartoonist didn't read the book) and was adverse to manual labour (in fact she revered it).
This idea that she forgot the "workers" is nonsense and only something that an NDP pol could dream up. In their arrogance they actually believe they are the only ones who think they figured out an economy needs people to work. So stupid. |

The cartoon doesn't say that. It says that the book ends with the great industrialists and other chosen square-jawed steely-eyed ubermensch leaving society and watching it disintegrate without them--it goes on to describe a humorously critical "sequel" in which they are then forced to carry on or rebuild society in their own image, but they are alone in the enclave founded by John Galt (no janitors, garbagemen, or plumbers were invited, iirc) and find life without underlings isn't quite as glamorous as they'd imagined. |
