|
|
A few days ago I made a post regarding a rumor that GEPIK employees will be required to work Sundays during the 2008 -2009 school year. I am here to CONFIRM THE RUMOR TO BE TRUE! I just came back from a meeting with a public elementary school in Gwangmyeong City. I brought my signed contract and documents as requested. However, when the school presented me with two more copies to sign I discovered an extra supplement to the contract which requires all Gwangmyeong GEPIK employees to an English weekend day camp on Sunday.
The documents states the following;
During the term of this agreement the employee will perform the following duties 2 - 3 times a year.
- Participate in an English Day Camp for the students in the Gwangnyeong city school district
- The day camp will be held on Sundays.
- The actual service bonus will be provided in accordance with Gwangnyoung city school district policy.
This is a bunch of BS. Why are we being forced to work Sundays? Also, it does not even state when the actual working dates or time. Of course it is nice that to get extra pay, but the fact of the matter is the school board is FORCING teachers to work Sundays. I am not sure if this just applies to Gwangmyeong city employees or the entire GEPIK program, but I think it's unfair to add something extra at the last minute to the contract.
I asked the school to give me some extra information about the Day Camp, such as time location, when people are scheduled, etc. They said they don't know much about it themselves because they just received these new conditions about a week ago. Also, I asked if this would interfere with our vacation time. Again, they were not sure.
Because of all the unanswered questions, I refused to sign this form until I was given more details about it. If it was optional I wouldn't care too much, but the fact that it's forced is what really steams me! I don't want to work day camps, especially during my vacation period or a long weekend. Has anyone else, especially Gwangmyeong Public School Employees, seen this yet? What do you think about these new conditions?

Maybe they should require you to spend a little time on Sundays just learning how to punctuate properly.
It's Official GEPIK Employees Have to Work Sundays!
P.S. I do realize that liberties must sometimes be taken to fit in all in with the number of spaces alloted to a heading. Still, a simple period would've done it. |

The biggest factor of this is being asked to work a Sunday during my vacation time. That, I certainly will not do. Plus, it was presented to me at the last moment. Trust me, you'd be upset too if your employer did the same thing to do. |

Doesn't sound legal to me.
Isn't it overtime?
Will Immigration allow them to have teachers work at a different location? |

No one is "making" you do anything. No one made you come to korea. No one is making you sign a supplement contract.
No one can use you unless YOU let them. |

I second that.
Tell them you're very sorry, that you really wanted the job but you simply aren't interested in working on weekends.
no doubt the K teachers union was adamant not to do this since they already work Saturdays - I can just hear them "make the foreigners work on a weekend for a change!!" - no, nope, uh uh, no way jose!

I agree with most of the responses here.
I actually worked at my school 2 saturdays last term (without pay) but I did this as a favor to them and I was happy to do it.
If your originial contract stated that you would have weekends off and now they're trying to push a new one over on you mandating weekend work... I don't care whether it's saturday or sunday or how much they are paying you... they have NO RIGHT to try and force this on you.
Like me, you can opt to do them a favor (informally, with or without pay) but you should not sign anything stating that you must work on the weekend.
If they try to push it, they've gone too far and you need to walk away. It's their loss. With the new regulations, they can't replace you that easily.
You have the upper hand. Use it. |

Don't back down, either. Chances are there are some worms/snakes who will do it. Don't be one of them. |
