No, it's not legal. But you can have it done safely. If you search you should be able to find a thread on it. I know that the boyfriend/husband has to go with the girlfriend/wife in order to have it done, so unlike back home there is no real privacy.

...and there is always coat hangers, if your time is running out.

I swear this hasn't actually happened yet... but in case it does...

How can I have it done safely if it's not legal? Are there secret clinics that do it or something?

Well, hagwons are technically illegal too and they are still everywhere. Same goes for Dabangs and other establishments. An illegitimate business in Korea has a lot more potential to develop than it does back home.

I don't know where any of these clinics are--I got this information from my girlfriend awhile back (no, we didn't have it done). I strongly recommend using the search and copying down the clinic's addresses.

Thanks for the help. Let's hope it's never an immediate concern. Why oh why did I use my real name on here... it seems like I'm always posting about drugs and gambling and abortion clinics...

Abortion is the most common form of birth control in Korea. That's one of the reasons it's illegal for an OBG to advise the parents of the sex of the baby. They get around that law by telling them it's blue or pink. We had a 16 year old student fall prey to the boyfriend line, "It's your first time you can't get pregnant." Our boss is a very sympathetic woman and helped the girl with getting an abortion. She told us that it's very common in Korea. Smile

No secret clinics, they are generally performed at the OBGYN. And I do not believe it's true that the father has to be there.

Also, this website has some specific locations, including Planned Parenthood: http://www.womenonwaves.org/article-456-en.html#south%20Korea

ALSO, there is a very foreigner-friendly OBGYN in Hannam-dong, near Itaewon. Here is the info on Galbijim:

It's not illegal. I don't have the lawbooks in front of me, but i'm 99% sure it's not illegal. Costs about $300 at the hospital. The guy doesn't need to be there or sign anything. I don't know really know the details.

Friend of mine had it done. No big deal. They were too late for the morning after pill, so they just waited three weeks. In and out, about same price as billybrobby said I think, I don't know the actual price they paid. Abortion is such a dirty word now, it is such a simple procedure. She worked the same day she had it done.

Last I read it was indeed illegal, but doctors are willing to do it cause they get all the monkey from the procedure.

The argument about 40% so it can't be illegal is dumb has hell. Prostitution and driving on the sidewalk is illegal, too, and I'm pretty sure royally fucking over employees isn't legal, but this is Korea.

This wasn't the article, but here's a pretty clear explanation of how it's illegal, but the illegality is ignored.

http://ahnse.blogspot.com/2007/11/abortion-in-korea.html

Quote:

Chapter XXVII of the Criminal Code prohibits procuring and administering abortions. However, in 1973, the Maternal and Child Health and the Mother and Fatherless Child Health Acts established exemptions from this prohibition.

According to the laws, a physician may perform an abortion if the pregnant woman or her spouse suffers from an eugenic or hereditary mental or physical disease specified by the Presidential Decree, if the woman or her spouse suffers from a communicable disease specified by Presidential Decree, if the pregnancy results from rape or incest or if continuation of the pregnancy is likely to jeopardize the mothers health.

Even though the Korean legal system may punish those that procure and perform an abortion, prosecutors rarely prosecute those that perform or procure abortions because of the exceptions, the fact that doctors can fit their case into the exemptions, and the fact that the attitude of Koreans towards abortion has drastically changed since the imposition of the law.

Go to Ewha women's university and look for the 산부인과 and you'll be able to get it done. It is illegal, but so is prostitution, running red lights, & using speakers on a bongo truck, but the cops don't care.
