Interesting article.
I'm curious about the reference to censorship.
Have they stopped cutting films up there? I never understood Korean censorship standards.  |

| Not being fluent in Korean, I usually wait for Korean movies to come out on DVD so that I can get the subtitles in English... but, a coworker was telling me that they had seen Scandal in the theatre and it had English subtitles already included. As soon as I get an evening free, I want to check it out. I'd love it if this became a standard practice. Anyone know any other movies in the theatre that have English subtitles? |

If you're a BitTorrent junkie like me, there's usually one or two Korean films a week (with subtitles) torrented at suprnova.
If you don't know what I'm talking about...er, never mind. |

| CGV in myungdong was showing scandal with english subtitles for a week. As far as Im aware its the only time scandal has been shown with subtitles, and I'm pretty sure this will never be a standard, with the exception of festivals. |

I usually use Kazaa but I am slowly being convinced to try out BitTorrent.

Jonathan Kim? Kim Song-soo? If more Korean direts used anglicized names it'll be a shame - but I think Korean film quality has been dropping. It's glossier. More modern, techically sophisticated, etc. - but the stories are sliding into mediocrity. I can't think of a recent Korean film that knocked my socks off. A year ago - sure. 2003 - not really.

Its a good topic.. but the title confuses me.. 'positive topic of the week' as if to imply there is only one and all the others are negative.
This is as an aside.. but I seldom if ever see the negative ones.. maybe one a week.. and I'm itching to hear something negative because its fun to point out the positive.. but no luck so far this week..

Regarding the Korean film industry.. I quite like it alot.. its better than Japanese. There is a more realism quality to Korean films. I quite admire and respect that.
I haven't been blown away with anything as of recently.. but overall in a general way, there are few Korean films I walked away from thinking what a waste of time - except for maybe that psi-fi 'Shriro' flick.. or whatever that was..
Generally.. TWO THUMBS UP for Korean films. "Lies" was my favorite because so controversial.. and so strange for Korea.. its like something out of what should be from France.. yet here it is coming out of Korea. |

Again, I beg to differ. I find Japan to be the same in this regard. I find most Korean films entertining but incredibly false when compared to the real Korea. THE ROAD HOME was an eample of that. LOTS of wishful thinking. There' realism, but no more or no less than Japan.
Want an Asian cinema with sttep roots in realism: conemporary Taiwanese cinema. Two of the (few) big players are Tsai Ming-laing and Hou Hsia-hsien. It doesn't get much more honest than their work...

You should see the direstor's earlier work. FROM ME TO YOU was quite similar but less explicit. LIES was based on a banned book. Its author was imprisoned in SK.
LIES was financed through a French company, so you're pretty astute.

Tiger beer, the reason why I put that as the header is in direct response to all the negative critacisms about Korean(especially from Real reality) so every week there will be a positive article associated with living in Korea. It is my community service to daves ESL  |
