Do all schools have the same holidays, or are they different? Anyone know the dates that the schools will give me vacation? I'll be in the same province as Deajeon...
Thanks |

Got bad news for you: different public school districts have different breaks. On top of that, different schools within the same district have different breaks. Even worse, Daejeon isn't part of any province (although it used to be the capital of the one which currently surrounds it), so it doesn't matter what special days off the schools in the surrounding province have. All public schools, though, do get the same national holidays off. And as a foreign teacher, your contract guarantees you Saturdays and Sundays off in addition to national holidays.
Now for the good news. When you get to your school, ask for your own copy of the school's annual handbook. One section consists of two pages. It lists all the special occasions for the entire school year, to include extra days off. It includes, of course, the dates of Science Day, Picnic Days, Midterms, and Finals. Those are days which there will be no classes held. |

Good advice. It astounds me that many co-teachers dont offer this to us automatically. Mostly I think it doesnt occur to them but in rare instances I suspect its a conscious ploy to keep us in the dark & off-balance.
Know that this annual calendar exists & request it politely -- you have every right to it.
But also know that while its generally a dependable guide, special days & vacation dates can & do change as the year goes along. Making fixed travel plans months in advance can be chancy. |

Some of the public schools keep their "breaks" a guarded secret so that they can hold back off-time as a reward/punishment for Korean teachers based on class test scores. |

Public school breaks do differ a little, but most are off from the end of January to the beginning of March, except for a 1-2 week period of classes in early February. The summer vacation is from the mid to end of July to the end of August.
But this might not dictate your vacation time as many PS contracts give you x number of days off. Many people who are not on official vacation must go into their school, even if no students and or Korean teachers are there. Some let the foreign teacher off during that time, too. And don't forget camps! Many PS require the teacher to work a camp for 1-3 weeks during the break. |

Yes. Insist on getting a copy of the yearly plan, and sitting down and going through what is what and how it will affect you and your teaching.
I disagree with Schwa though, about it being 'rare', that they are trying to keep us in the dark.
All my co teachers at public school have denied to my face that such a thing even exists, so then I am forced to get it from another teacher. When I ask (confront) my co teacher about it, and show them that I have a copy, they look really furious, and then say it was a 'misunderstanding' - they thought I wanted something else And not one of them has been able to give me a good reason for why I shouldn't have access to that information.
It is really really ridiculous, and completely annoying. |
