Anyone have experience arriving at Bangkok Airport and paying then and there to hop on the first flight available to one of the islands? Was this an easy task? Did you have to wait ages?

How much does it roughly cost return to Koh Samui or Phuket?

Currently been quoted a price from Incheon to Koh Samui in March for 864000 (incl tax) but not sure if this is too much.

864,000 is way too expensive for March. Go to a travel agent or have a Korean speaking friend help you buy a ticket online

Rountrip flights to Bangkok can be bought (if cheap) for about 450 with tax.

It's more of a hassle, but from Bangkok you can fly to Phuket on Air Asia (www.airasia.com) for about $50 or you can try Bangkok Airways. All in all it is a hassle, but much cheaper!

thanks Howyoudooin, just checked out the AirAsia site and prices to Phuket - so cheap!

A friend of mine is booking through the same Korean travel agency which gave me the quote to Koh Samui. He would be on the same flight but only to Bangkok and his fare is 550 before tax. Departing first week of March.

How much of a hastle would it be showing up at BKK and booking the next budget airline flight to an island? Don't mind staying in Bangkok a couple of days either.

I've turned up and got a flight to Phuket. Just hang around in the airport for a few hours.

Unless you're travelling at Xmas, New Year or Songkran.

Check the local flight schedules for NokAir ThaiAir etc and try to arrive at the Airport at an appropriate time.

The ticket offices open around 7:30 am if memory serves correctly. I got a flight around 11am. So not too bad.

I booked roundtrip to Bangkok, and a separate ticket with bangkok airways to go to Koh Samui. If you google them, you'll notice that on flights from Bangkok to Koh Samui, the first and last flights of the day are discounted. I arrived in Bangkok at something stupid like 3am, so I caught the very first flight out, and saved a bundle. You might want to try going that route. Book a roundtrip ticket to Bangkok, then go from there.

for Samui you dont, Bangkok Airways runs out of the domestic concourse at the new airport. easy transfer though last summer because they were building a new terminal at Samui you cleared immigration at BKK (it was next to the Bangkok Airways transfer desk in the int concourse), not customs though, no baggage inspection even at Samui

Try OX [orient Thai] for the flight over and to the islands.
It's 300k for the flight over. I think they have a rather expensive fixed price at 1700 baht regardless of destination, so shop around, with some advance planning you can get a ticket for 200-300 baht.

I'm loathe to suggest them, as they've screwed me in various ways, however AirAsia.com has cheap-esque flights with facist boarding policies regarding weight and changing times.

After the recent Phuket crash of the OneTwoGo airline, I'd give them a miss. Check BBC or CNN for more details.

well now leaning towards phuket coz the flights seem so much cheaper flyng there with Airasia compared to Samui with Bangkok Air.

Don't want to stay on Patong BEach, can anyone vouch for a quieter area such as Karon, Kata Beaches? Only going to have 4days, 4 nights to spend.
