I'm sure (I hope!) that this has been discussed on Dave's before, but the search function doesn't seem to be working now. I'm aware that Koreans use the backslash key for their won symbol, but that doesn't work on my English version of Windows.

How can I type the won symbol short of holding down the alt key and banging out the unicode characters every time? I mean, I've got the Korean IME set up and I'd think there's a key for it somewhere in that mapping.

Make sure you have the Korean ime selected and then use the backslash key.

That key doesn't work for me most of the time. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ㄴㄷㄷ? 야우'ㅅ 재가. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ See? Didn't work. I know friends have had similar problems. \][ㅔㅐ[]\][ㅔㅐ[]\
'

All of the keys around it work. But the won key won work. Har har.

It's on the won key just to the left of the left-pointing arrow on the number/symbols row above the enter key.

You don't have a backslash key, or, the won symbol is your backslash key.

Though there technically is a unicode character for the won symbol, Koreans long ago (probably before there was a separate unicode character for the won) mapped the won symbol to the backslash key. So technically, everytime you press the won key, it's doing a backslash, but since your OS region is set to Korea, it displays as a won symbol. That's why you see won symbols in a file's path where backslashes should be.

Those won symbols would show up as backslashes on my laptop. If, however, you actually typed the unicode won symbol, it would show up as a won symbol on anybody's computer.

Awesome explanation. I've always wondered about that.

One thing I still don't get though. If I hit backslash it shows as backslash. The |||| key is shared with the won symbol on this korean keyboard. If I press what should be the won key though, I get \\\\ . Hitting the keyboard button that switches to Korean doesn't change anything either.

However, when I go to the address bar in firefox and hit the won button that normally gives me \\\\ I get the won symbol. AND if I copy/paste the won symbol somewhere else it shows up as \\\\ again.

That's just plain confusing.

I'm not sure about this, but my guess is that it has to do with what program you're using. What's confusing is that it sounds like you have a backslash and a won key on your keyboard. You should only have one or the other (there is a forward slash on both keyboards, but that's a different keyboard code).

There is no key on the Korean keyboard for the actual unicode won symbol. So whether you press the backslash or the won key, the same keyboard code is being sent through. How that code is interpretted depends on the software.

For example, if you've set your region setting to Korea (regardless of whether your Windows is actually a Korean or an English Windows), then the backslash code shows up as a won. Because you said that Firefox displays it as a won symbol, I'm assuming that your region is set to Korea. If another program still shows it as a backslash, then I'm assuming that program is in English and it's ignoring the region setting on your OS.

If you truely have a backslash key as well as a won key on your keyboard, then try pressing backslash in Firefox. It should still show up as a won symbol because it's the same code.

P.S. Changing the keyboard settings between KO and EN won't make a difference because both keyboard mappings send the same backslash code when you press the won key. It's up to the software to decide how to display that code.

I just tried all of those scenarios...and it's the exact same for me. And I get the won sign in the Google toolbar/browser bar when my keyboard is set to English!

That doesn't help, but at least you know it's not just your computer!

I dunno. But the keyboard is set to Korean, Korean. Before, I had to switch the keyboard more than once. Like it was switching from Eng to Kor setup, then from Kor-Eng with in that setup. Now it's flat Kor-Eng.

Otherwise...I have no idea how to locate the information you just asked for. Very Happy

Edit: Just realized that link was not a sig line but a real link. My control panel is a bit different but the non-unicode setting is Korea. Is that what you mean?

The computer I was on was a korean computer which I had installed English firefox on. Also, it was the standard Korean keyboard. Sorry if that was confusing. No backslash, just won. The won just comes out as a backslash.

You could always type the letter w, then use the strikethrough function. Looks okay in Word, but I tried to copy and paste it into here, and it just came up as a w. Not much help if you are a forum-junkie. Smile
