|
|
When I saw the news about Namdaemun Gate being burned by a disgruntled arsonist, I was not surprised. The arsonist suggested in his interrogation that he had been angry because he had been evicted from his Seoul home and offered 100 million won for the property (apparently worth much more). Therefore, several times he tried to seek additional compensation through the government system but was ignored. He said that during one court appearance, the judge refused to speak a single word to him.
Knowing how we teachers are ignored and our complaints are thrown aside, I was not surprised to find that the arsonist was angry with a justice system who helped, in a round about way, to sack an old man of his rightful property.
The info I read also said that Korea's status-conscience system also ignored him because he had only gone to elementary school.
This whole situtation is abominable for everyone. Everyone lost, but typically it seems, in a disupte in Korea, all parties will lose in the end, it is like no one there can come to a fair agreement or understanding. Now, look at this mess! I cannot believe it. Let us hope that the development company that took over his property in such a hostile way, is also investigated in this tragedy! |

Other governments do the same thing when they expropriate land. They give you the current market value. They won't consider the future market value even if that is the main reason you bought the property. |

Not at all.
It's also just as silly as the sweeping conclusions about American societal ills that some people drew from the Virginia Tech tragedy. The only thing "proven" in either case is that someone with an ax to grind can take an anomalous event perpetrated by a mentally unstable individual and use it to whatever end they choose. |

Why protect Namdemun when the money saved on it could mean at least 2 or three trips to room salons per year on the gov't dole?
Some Korean guy weighed the possibilities and decided it just wasn't worth it. |
