my first question is about travel insurance. i'm going to do some traveling, and know about travel insurance that will cover me when traveling in asia. but i plan on returning home for a month or so before coming back to korea and was wondering if it is possible to buy insurance to cover me while i'm back home in the states.

my second question is, is it possible to open up a bank account in china with just a travel visa. i have a bunch of yuan and don't really feel like carrying all of it around with me and would rather put it in a bank.

Yes, it is possible. Buy it at the airport. If I am not mistaken, there are Samsung counters in the arrival hall that sell insurance for people who want to go back to their home country.

You can buy it at most travel agents, I've done that before.
