The car involved was not part of the race, it came up behind the spectators who had spilled onto the road to watch the cars that were racing take off. It was dark, and there was tyre smoke in the air - he ploughed straight into them.

Pretty harsh on the driver - driving along one minute minding his own business, the next, ground to a halt in a scene of absolute carnage of his making.
