Anyone who switched to Vista experiencing slow internet speeds? It seems to be a common problem. I tried some fixes: disabling firewalls, uninstalling security software, to no avail. Any ideas? |

no problems here. do you have a second (xp) computer that you can test speeds on concurrently with your vista machine? I doubt it's an o/s issue. |

The slow internet using vista that you are experiencing may be due to the RAM of your computer.
Windows Vista likes at least 1g of Ram. When installing it on my friend's desktop computer [he has 500 [approx] ram and Vista gave the message
" can run programs" but suggest a ram upgrade. He found everything slow until he upgraded.
Vista uses a lot of ram so I use my entire disk for its operation. I put a back up on an external disk. |

nfldbrian is right, I think. But there is more.
Many of the less expensive Vista laptops use a big chunk of RAM for video memory. I think mine is like 256 mb reserved for video. That's why the 1gb memory in Vista ends up inadequate a lot of the time.
Also, if you are using bitorent tied to browser it can suck up all of your available RAM, causing the entire computer, hard drive and CPU, to slow down. You are then using the virtual RAM on your hard drive. If you switch to uTorrent, this doesn't happen. Your CPU is not bogged down.
I was pulling my hair out and determined to get another gig of RAM. But then I switched to uTorrent.
I have Vista home premium, or whatever they call it. I don't think I am having your problems with my set up.
I would still like to get another gig, but I have two 512 mb sticks, so I would have to buy two 1 gig sticks and throw out the old sticks.
Also, you can stick in a flash memory card, maybe even a USB flash memory stick, and set the system to use it as a sort of RAM, if it is fast enough. I'm not sure exactly what it is doing; I think it is using it for virtual RAM.
Hope this helps. |

Everything I've read says to have a minimum of 2gb of RAM for Vista. 1gb is considered bare-bones. |

what I've read is that 1gb will run vista adequately for a desktop. The problem comes for 1gb with laptops and shared video memory.
Having said that I was at Yongsan today and saw desktop that was "vista" with only 256 ram. I didnt' even think it was possible to run vista on that little ram. Total cost was 200,000. |

Vista can be slow on the inet especaily if you use any P2P/Torrent software. By default and this Can't be changed las time I checked vista comes with a TCP/IP stack driver that has a limited amount of connections its allowed to have inorder to avoid zombie/bots of highjacked machined. This is why I use Xp64 (uses stack from windows server which isn't fcking cripled beyond) |

There was also this ridiculous crap about how if audio was playing in the background, it would slow down your internet speed in Vista. It blows my mind how they would let that affect your internet bandwidth, but it did at some point. I believe it was fixed in the past few months though, so if you Vista isn't updated, make sure you get it up to date. You also might want to look into getting the full Service Pack 1 through back channels because it is not publicly available yet. |
