I've seen on www.gobada.co.kr that, due to the number of marchers being greater than expected, the route for the anti grand canal march has been changed. Initially organizers expected marchers to be on the pavements but they now believe it will be better to use the whole street.

Marchers will still be meeting at 2pm on Sunday February 24th, but the new meeting place is Cheonggyecheon Plaza.

The new route for the march is this.

Let em build their canal. They want to destroy the country that's their business.
Why did you post this, It's ILLEGAL for foreigners to protest, unless of course your Cindy Sheehan on an anti Bush platform, then they'll turn a blind eye to that one.

In general Koreans don't care about the environment, so why should you?

Ughhh.. I can't stand when Koreans protest and have no problems blocking the streets up in Jongno which are major bus routes.

That's why they changed to route, so that most of it will be on roads already closed to traffic on Sundays.

If foreigners participate in the protest march they may indeed be breaking the law. I guess we might end up getting rather sternly worded letters from the immigration office. At worst - and I seriously doubt it would ever come to this - maybe we'll be arrested and deported. If that happens all the Korean authorities will achieve is a lot of very bad publicity.

As for the 'since Koreans don't care, why should we?' argument. I think you'll find that a growing number of Koreans are getting quite concerned about various environmental issues both in and outside Korea. And don't forget that atmospheric pollution doesn't recognize borders. Korea is the world's 10th biggest producer of greenhouse gases, and despite LMB's rosy predictions of how the canal will help combat global warming, there are far more effective and less destructive ways of achieving this in Korea.

The "let the Koreans screw up their own environment" attitude shows a real lack of understanding. Aside from being a major emitter of greenhouse gases, Korea is investing huge amounts in Canada's heavily polluting oil sands mining industry and is a voracious consumer of rainforest timber, so Korea's impact on the environment goes well beyond the confines of this small peninsula. Korea wants to gain greater global recognition, and growing numbers of Koreans realize that this requires global responsibilities.

I'll be there, although I'll be taking pictures, not marching and chanting.

Maybe I'll see you there. I'll be the self-immolating guy cutting off his finger. Very Happy
