I am not saying I believe this at all, however, there's a book on the theory that oil is abiotic. Although this theory has been around for quite some time, I only found out about it recently. Oil may not come from dinosaur bones and vegetable matter after all.......

So, I found this interesting...

Here's a quote about what this book is about:

Quote:
...conclusions reached by Dr. Thomas Gold, a professor at Cornell University, in his seminal book The Deep Hot Biosphere: The Myth of Fossil Fuels (Copernicus Books, 1998) and accepted by many in the scientific community that oil is not a product of fossils and prehistoric forests but rather the bio-product of a continuing biochemical reaction below the earth's surface that is brought to attainable depths by the centrifugal forces of the earth's rotation.

Here's a link to this book:

And a link to another book called "Black Gold Stranglehold" that says governments and corporations already know about this "fact" (hehe, fact is used very loosely there)... and are using it to their advantage!

A WIKIpedia link about Abiotic oil.

Wikipedia has a good background article on abiotic oil.

It's not 100% looney tunes, mind you. But I wouldn't invest in a company trying to find oil based on abiotic ideas.

The Wikipedia article has some interesting background about the development of the hypothesis of abiotic oil generation, and logically it's plausible and demonstrable that hydrocarbons can be generated by abiotic geological processes. But so far it hasn't been demonstrated that abiotic processes generate hydrocarbons in economically significant quantities...which is unfortunate, depending on your viewpoint.
