I'm leaving Korea to go back at the end of the month.
I bought a gayageum (the big wooden korean instrument with strings) and learned that in Korea. Since it's time to go home I want to take it back with me.
I thought it was okay to just bring on the plane and an oversized checked baggage, but Korean air is telling me that I can't. I have to purchase another seat just for it.
And I'm wondering how do people get away with skis and golf clubs and etc? I mentioned that to them but they kept saying I have to buy another seat.
I really want to take this home, so is there another way I can, and if anyone has any suggestions?
If I mail it home, will I have to deal with customs keeping it since it's value is about $500 USD?
Any experiences to share?
thanks.

I took a big sword home through the over-sized baggage check(flying with Air Canada). Can you try another airline?
