Quote:
A state television's in-depth report on sexual harassment, and even alleged rape by sports coaches of female athletes is causing an outrage across the nation.

The KBS ``Ssam'' investigative program on Monday aired its ``Report on Human Rights in Sports and Sexual Assaults'' showing perpetrators with their reputations and social status remaining intact, and their female victims suffering from long-time trauma.

In the program, a sports insider testified that many of his fellow trainers said, ``Having a sexual relationship is the first way to gain control of female athletes; violence is the second.''

Unbelieveable aye, with all the hoohaa about foreign english teachers in this country and how sexually deviant they are the real problem regarding sexual abuse in this male dominated hierarchical society is seemingly pushed aside and forgotten about by all and sundry. A pro volleyball coach raping the whole team and nothing being done about it? If i was a native female in this country i think it would be about time to start some serious backlash against ignorant ajosshi pigs. Start the revolution, take a leaf out of the black panther's book ladies and fight fire with fire, if Mr Kim wants a little loving whether you like it or not, load him up with soju, wait till he passes out and take a carving knife to his little gochu.

another quote from the article:

Quote:
Another almost identical case involved basketball players at a high school who had to keep silent about their coaches. After they testified, the coaches banned them playing or assaulted them.

They sound like a bunch of pimps(not in a good way)

And the families help cover it up Exclamation

Quote:
one father said. ``Revealing the case in public is like destroying one's career, as most training staff share information about players between themselves and will not accept people who make a large fuss.''

Well gee if your kids career is that important(more so than the safety of other children) then I guess you did the right thing.

Quote:
The program introduced the one time captain of a professional volleyball team who was warned to keep silent about the team's coach raping nearly all of her teammates. She was told they would not be accepted in other teams if they raised the incident. The team was eventually dissolved.

There's only one person there who should have been 'dissolved'.

That's a real shame. I've always been quite impressed at the number of female athletes in Korea. It should be a source of real pride. But once again their stone-age ways cause problems. The scale on which it appears to be taking place is damning. These guys should be hung out to dry in public but once again nothing will probably be done. Ive always said that to stand by and watch these crimes take place is almost as sinful as the actual crime itself. In a society where this is the norm you can only expect more crimes of this nature to occur. Vicious cycle and very sad really.

When has this ever happened? Cue apologetic appeals from coaches in wheelchairs outside court rooms asking for reputations to be saved and protection for their family from shame. Not to forget a convincing promise to never misbehave again and it was all due to been drunk at the time anyway.

The Korean female skaters made the news before involving abuse at the hands of the coaches http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/news/story?id=1920698 but this is a new low.

They definitely need criminal background checks and interviews for coaches, and they need to issue coaching licenses.

I think a counseling program for victims would be good, but unfortunately I'm sure most of them would rather keep it secret.

The most stunning thing is the prevalence of it--even at elementary school level!
