I've got an HP Pavillion. My TV's an LG, a basic set. I bought an A/V cable. On the RCA side of the cable, there is only one male connector. On my TV, there are two female receptors. I connected the laptop and the TV, change the TV to the mode I'd use to play videos from my DVD player (which feeds the set two plugs). I go no picture.

I'm not a tech wiz, but'd like to watch videos from my laptop on my TV. Ideas?

Look at your Function buttons (e.g. F1, F2 etc). One of those buttons should have a picture of two screens on it. You will probably have to push the Fn button and while holding it down push the corresponding function button. That switches you over to your telly.

Be sure to get the connecting cable first. Otherwise, pressing the keys above won't do a thing. The cables are pretty cheap and are available at E-Mart, Home plus, etc.

edit: ok so I was messing with the display settings for a while..and I thought it worked. The screen on my laptop matched what was on the tv BUT when i go open any movies or media files...there is no pictures..just sound....

please help!

edit: under display there is panel and tv and these two buttons. I mess around with them. When I open a movie/media it's either displayed on my laptop and not on the tv (even though everything else shows on the tv) OR

it plays on the tv and not my laptop.

SO confusing...

You need to run a cable from your headphone hole to your TV. Then u'll have sound out of the telly.

That's normal. I think there is something you can do to get both running at the same time but I'm not sure. You'd probably have to play around with your "hardware devices" settings.

I have sound...just I can't get picture on both laptop & tv...it's either or but never both...so frustrating. Is it because my laptop is old?? My friend just plugged hers in and got it working...no messing with the display settings at all. Grrrr

Your laptop is set to mute it's own display when you do TV out.

I'm not sure why this is a problem, but if you go into the advanced video settings for your laptop you can probably find that option and undo it.
