Hi everybody! I have 3 questions concerning criminal background checks, notarization, and the airfare ticket fee for South Korea:
1) I have not received my criminal background check yet, but when I do it will have my middle name included. I am Canadian, which means I'll be getting my CBC notarized by the Korean Consulate here in Toronto. My passport and degree, however, only list my first and last name, not my middle name. I am aware that the degree and passport names should definitely match, but wasn't too sure on the CBC?
Will the Korean Consulate give a big fuss about this and make me get another CBC minus the middle name? Or will presenting my birth certificate and/or my driver's licence or health card be okay enough to show them I'm 'me'?
2) Notarization: I've read conflicting reports that I should be getting my degree and CBC notarized by the Korean Consulate, not the public notary. Then another article says I need to get it notarized by the public notary. Then another report says both need to be notarized by the public notary and Korean consulate. Getting notarized by the Korean notary seems to be the safer route, or are Canadians supposed to go to a Public Notary instead?
3)Concerning plane ticket fee: I am aware that public schools, like the Epic program, want the applicant to pay for their own plane ticket upfront to Korea (who are then reimbursed later in-country). I, however, will be going the Hagwon route (private school). I read that Hagwons pay upfront for the plane ticket, meaning, I do not have to pay out of my own pocket to come to Korea. Does this still hold true? Or do I have to pay upfront and be reimbursed later?
Thanks in advance for your help! |

1) Probably shouldn't matter, and you couldn't get a CBC without your middle name, anyways.
2) Get it notarized (and make sure there's a raised seal on it) and then approved by the consulate. Canada's different like this because we don't have apostilles...
3) Lots of places aren't paying the ticket over, anymore. Just the flight home. You can try and hold out for on that does, but it might be a harder job search. |

When did the CBC start notarizing documents? |

I am unclear about your question, but if you are referring to the RCMP notarizing the CBC, then no, they don't do that. I wish they did, however. It would make my job of finalizing my documents a lot easier instead of travelling all over the city getting different things done to one document. Apologies if I misinterpreted your question.
Well, just to update this thread: I got my record check back finally. Not that I was afraid there would be anything on there, but fortunately there isn't. I got a traffic ticket once, but that's the extent of my nefarious activities. I must say though that getting my record check is like getting a HIV test. Even though you know you're clean, you're just naturally nervous for some reason.
banjois, thank you for clearing up the middle name question. I'm relieved I won't have to shell out another $75 bucks for another record check with just my first and last name. |
