So on the Facebook South Korean discussion board, I came across this fellow. He claims to be an English teacher. Granted we all make typos on the internet, but these aren't typos, these are consistent grammar mistakes like he doesn't know English. He obviously lacks knowledge of English sentence structure and grammar rules. This guy is teaching someone's children and might be making more money than you! lol

He said, "US people."

I assume he's talking about South African people such as himself? Laughing

I don't want to raise any red flags or anything, but I do beleive at the EPIK 2005 orientation there were no South Africans. I think the reason why is shown above.

Oh and anybody remember ADOONS?

No read it again, "Not Americans really, but US people are the worst..they don't even know the name of their president, talkin' about stupidity...he he.......But hey at least now few Americans (US)"

(I think you're being sarcastic though)

I THINK he's specifying "American (US)" to mean USA Americans as opposed to the Americans from every other country in North or South America.

(Wasn't there a thread a while back about how (US) Americans who call themselves Americans are just stuck up because they don't make up every country on either continent? And how anyone from any country in North or South America could be considered "American" the same way that someone from a country in Europe could be called "European"? And then there was the "United Statesian criminal check" thread.)

And "learnt" is indeed a real word. It's the past participle of "learn" and usually considered British spelling.

I'm not defending him. I can barely make sense of him...

It's an asinine argument to say that people from the US who refer to themselves as Americans are stuck up. Listen to people from other countries on the North American and South American continents. Generally, they refer to us citizens of the United States of America as Americans.

Now, if you wish to talk about some egregious grammar and spelling errors, read almost any thread on this forum. One of my pet peeves is the misuse of pronouns. In one post a day or so ago, I read "Her and her friend went* [...]." That's not a misspelling; it's BAD GRAMMAR! I don't want to raise my blood pressure, so I won't give examples of the misuse of the reflexive pronouns.

*I dont remember the actual verb used; however, the point is that the pronoun Her was being used as a subject.

I resent that. I know the name of my president, it's Manny Ortiz right? (sorry, people not from Boston might not get that)

Since when did ellipses have 7 periods?.......

What is that supposed to mean?

There are a few Americans I know whose spelling and grammar leaves much to be desired.

English is NOT the first language of South Africans. That would seem to be the problem for this guy, if in fact he is South African.

Some parts of his writing seem like a Korean pretending to be a foreigner. Confusing the present simple is usually a good indicator of that.

Really? Golly, I will have to phone home and tell my mother she really screwed up and taught me the wrong language.

Do some research! There are 11 official languages. There are first-language speakers of each of the 11 languages. I can only speak English. All of my school life I studied English as a first language. Most of my friends are monolingual English speakers.

This guy is a terrible example of an English teacher, but I have met people from other nationalities who are equally appalling. If English is not HIS first language, it does not mean ALL South Africans are the same.

Wrong!

English is my first language.

English is not the first language of ALL South Africans.

I call it like I see it. I have no probs with South Africans and most have great English. But at the EPIK 2005 orientation there were none. Some said it was because they were to belligerent, some said bad accents and some said weak English. Take your pock or none of the above, but there were no South Africans at the EPIK 2005 orientation.
