I told my boss that I was sick and wouldn't be able to make it.

Here's what I hear from my boss:

"Go to the hospital now, and try to come in if you can."

I go to the hospital, get a check-up and some basic prescriptions. I go to the school, bag of pharmaceuticals in hand, and get a response that is more of a sigh of relief. Literally, it was:

"Are you okay? I didn't know what I was going to do if you didn't come in. I have to teach classes in the afternoon, so I can't watch the other kids. You don't have to teach today, just watch them."

I told the boss that if I was just going to stare at my students for my afternoon classes, I would have just gone home.

Either way, I get a clear bill from the doctor's swab and recover after the second day (food poisoning from lots of raw seafood, I'm guessing).

I made these and other sacrifices early in my contract, which is good because they give me tons of punitive leverage later on if they decide to get tricky with it later.

Sorry, but no. Not really. You're just doing what they expect you to do. And if they can find a younger or more handsome/prettier teacher who will work for a lower salary (i.e. not a second-year salary) then they will.
