My experience w/ GIPIK is that it's a first rate organization, finest-kind. When I'm sick I come to work anyway and make an effort, it's what's know as being a trooper and not a girlish whiner. |

So everytime you see a foreign teacher behaving badly you think it reflects terribly on his country, people and culture?
Now if everyone had the same experience(s) you had then you may have a point. But that is not the case. |

Obviously its a school by school thing: I never had a problem taking a sick day. Sometimes I called, sometimes I texted. No one raised an eyebrow. I actually got a note from a doctor friend of mine at one point that would have allowed me to take a month off, but I didn't use it. I handed it in, took two days off, then earned huge kudos for coming in and working anyway. I did use 12 of my 15 days over the course of the year however. No grief. |

I took one sick day and left early twice to see a Doctor.
Never had a problem, though I think I should have taken
more sick days than I did. |

I go into work. I tell the school I need to see the doctor. They tell me to go ahead and to take as many days off I need. I come back to school 2 days later and they are telling me I should stay home until I feel 100% better. |
i tried that once, went in very sick with almost no voice left (just a squeaking noise), thought they'd send me home/doctor's. but instead they made me teach every single class. |

^ I hear you brother.
I soiled myself once in class after a bad chicken burger and they made me keep teaching all day long. The stench was terrible and it was in the middle of summer with no AC.
Signed on for a second year. |

At my old job, the one time I was sick (I had gastroenteritis and was vomiting every 45 minutes) my boss was the one who suggested I take a day off. No fuss, no muss; it wasn't in the contract, but he simply allowed me to rest. Didn't dock pay or anything.
At my current school there are no sick days built in. In fact, if you miss a day you have to come in on a Saturday to make it up. Needless to say, I've taught classes when I've been in pretty lousy condition.
F*ck it, I'm out in 11 days. |

When I used a sick day this year I just sent a text message to my coteacher. Wasn't a problem (I'm in EPIK). She even brought me some porridge after work, rather kind of her ^^ |
Does this change the OP's story? If his story is true--not in the least. |
I must have missed the part where I said I was trying to change the OP's story. |

Bad advice.
The doctor's note is easy to get, and it's a paper trail you can use later when they try to fire you for being a "bad teacher who took unneeded sick days." You should always get a doctor's note. |
Yes, guy. Just don't tell the plicks you have it.
Make photocopies of it. |

it's the same in japan, so don't think it's only korea.
ask the doctor to write you up a form that says that you should take sick days. then take the form to your boss and that should be the end of it.
to westerners, "sick days" is "sick days", here "sick days" is more like "serious near death sickness".
my friend's boss went into the hospital to get some pollops(sp) removed and he took "vacation days", nenkyuu, for that, not sick days.
it sucks, but i say get the paper from the doc. |

Your "let's compare everything to Japan (in a negative light)" is just as annoying as people always bashing Korea. |

it's not a let's compare japan in a negative light, it's "let's compare similar countries".
some of you ppl get your panties in a bunch because koreans xyz, and a lot of these incidents aren't something that's isolated to korea.
