With the new visa laws making it more difficult to find foreigners to work here I expect that we will soon be in high demand. So I think we should set up a standard for ourselves in terms of pay and benefits. I'm not necessarily talking about unionization, but I think it's important to spread the word on what we will and what we wont do. In the end it will help raise the quality of life for everyone.
For example, what do you think should be a base salary for beginners? What about people with experience? What about those who have a masters? TESOL?....
What do you think should be accommodations, benefits, overtime....
If we can agree on an amount, and everyone sticks to it, English teachers will have more bargaining power.
What do you think is reasonable? What should we ask for on our next contracts?
PS Im bored at work...

You'll be good for 2.5 million, if you learn how to spell "salary"! We are English teachers, right? |

I like how you propose 2.6 as a figure in your headline but then don't list that as an option in the poll. |

The new visa regulations really don't make it much more difficult to come here. New teachers have no idea that there are new requirements since they've never gone through the process. I doubt there will be many people who want to come across the globe to spend a year living in a different country who give up when they find out they have to get a criminal background check and a medical. |

Speak for yourself. If I had had to drive 8 hours to the nearest korean consulate for an interview , pay for CBC's, then be inspected at a korean health clinic I definitely would not be here. It's really not that difficult to get a job in the US paying the same or more as in korea. |

I voted for 2.5. That should be the norm, cuz living expenses have shot up.
I remember when my first hakwon was trying to get me for 1.8. They changed to 1.85... and then, slowly, to 1.9.
Those were the days.... hope nobody is getting paid 1.8 or 1.9 anymore! Even 2 seems a little low... |

I'm going low and saying 2.3. Vast majority of teachers here aren't the most qualified to teach. If you are though, then you should get more. |

Given that the E-2 visa may be relaxed to include more countries I doubt that this "high demand" will materialize any time soon. Not to mention what other people have already said about new teachers...
As for your second point there are what 100-200 regular posters on Dave's some of who aren't even teachers? That's a very small percentage of the overall amount of English teachers here many of whom don't even read Dave's. You'd have a small clique of teachers holding out for high wages and most of the rest taking what they are offered. |

That's true, but can you save the same amount as you do in Korea? That depends on your work experience and field of employment, but for a lot of people coming here straight outta college, saving $12-17K/year is enticing. |

I always thought "beggars can't be choosers"
We were in high demand before the news laws, hence the reason alot of less desirable teachers were hired in the first place. Who knows what's going to happen from now on. |

And the chances of them getting 2.5 million so they can grace the children with their amusing reading of The Enormous Turnip are slim |

You have to the consulate at some point to get a visa and you can do the interview at the same time.
CBC cost me $20
It's alot more difficult to find a job in the U.S that requires only a B.A in ANY subject and only 30 hours a week working hours that pays over $2000 a month including medical benifits, free rent and two weeks vacation. |

I also put 2.3, but it should go up with qualifications and experience.
Who put that the base "sallary" (as still spelled incorrectly in the poll) should be over 3.0? For someone who has qualifications and experience, maybe. For someone fresh off the plane? No way. |

I leave in about a month, Im thinking I might get in touch with some recruiters, put my CV up etc. then Im gonna say I wont work for less than 3 million.
I might even lead them on for a week or 2 and then demand more and more, see where it gets me.
Am I worth 3? No chance! Im lazy and once I got settled in here I just didnt have the motivation to maintain a high standard, especially when it wasnt demanded of me, and the boss keeps giving me a load of rubbish and has not uttered a single word of praise in my direction.
3 would allow me to either save like crazy or push me into my final phase of drinking myself to death, otehrwise theres just no point coming back. |

Most Koreans don't realise just how big Canada, Australia & US are. It's a 26 hour return drive to Sydney, from Brisbane. There is no Korean consulate in Brisbane (or Perth, or Melbourne). A flight from Perth to Sydney is over 5 hours. Each Way!
In 2006, I had a brief phone interview with the consulate in Sydney, & acquired my visa by post. In 2007, I did a visa run to Japan. Not sure yet, what will be happening end of 2008.
I really don't think the Filipinos & Indians will threaten job security / salaries of existing ESL teachers. The stated long term Korean government goal, is to have highly qualified Korean teachers, conducting English classes, alone. Time will tell. |
