Hi all! For those of you with experience in the country, I need your help in deciding where to base myself in terms of city and specific area of the city. Assuming that I have no particular preference of city, here is what I'm looking for, in order of importance:

(1) a place where there are hiking or jogging/cycling trails nearby - maybe even a park! (2) a couple of large shopping centres (like Costco, Homever, etc) (3) good fitness centres. (4) reasonable access to central areas of transport, so that I can explore other parts of Korea.

I'm not really into clubs/bars. I think nightlife might be something for every other weekend, for instance. In my free time I prefer taking classes (cooking, pilates, language, fitness...), maybe going to markets, seeing films.

Thanks!

Seoul fulfills all four of those categories. There are plenty of places to go hiking/jogging/cycling. The air might not be as fresh but the paths will be better made. You can't go wrong with Seoul when it comes to fitness centers, shopping, or transportation.

Ahh sorry, I don't think I was quite clear enough - I'm hoping for suggestions of which area of a city to live in.

I'm going to suggest Beomgye, because I know it really well. It's south of Seoul, in Anyang-si, and has all of that. Anyang itself is fine. Plus it isn't already polluted.

All the stuff you need is in a relatively small space which makes it rather convenient.

Some people might say the area is boring though, but I don't have a night life. If you do have a night life, I'd suggest Seoul over Anyang.

Ilsan is a safe bet. I've never lived there, but have friends who do. Do a quick search and you'll find a bunch of information about it.

I've been to Ilsan three times. It's great, I should've suggested that. The park on the East side of Ilsan is spended and designed for running--and there is no such thing as dirt there. It's almost as clean as Bundang.

However, the OP wanted a central place and Ilsan is way off the map in terms of accessibility. It probably takes an hour to get to Seoul/anywhere else via the subway line.

Southern Gangnam? Somewhere along the Yangjae-river......

If you mean somewhere around Seoul, then those are some good suggestions. Anyang is pretty close to Gwangmyung and Suwon so you'd be close to the faster trains. Can't really help you with good gyms, but there are so many places to explore all over Seoul you won't get bored fast.
