I'll be in Singapore with my girlfriend for 3-4 days during the first week in March. Anybody know any decent budget hotels? Hostels are not an option, and cleanliness is the most important aspect.

We've been considering one of the many hotel81 locations... they have over 50 hotels located throughout Singapore, and offer rooms starting at US$50 a night, which isn't too bad... Anybody stayed at a Hotel81 before? Thoughts?

Any other ideas?

I haven't stayed at the place you mentioned, but it's going to be hard to find a decent place for under $70. My gf and I stayed in this dump of a place last summer that ran about $80 a night. It had no windows, walls as thin as paper, and maids knocking on our door at 7am even with the 'do not disturb sign' on. The room was clean, but I wouldn't go back.

I advise you to look on http://www.tripadvisor.com/ and find something within your budget.

I stayed at Fragrance Hotel Emerald in Geylang(sp?) for almost a week. It's a hotel chain pretty much like hotel81. At that time the I had to pay something like 35 USD per night. The "hotel", if you can call it that, was quite clean with 24h hot water, TV, fridge and A/C. To me it didn't matter that the room was really tiny. What might matter to some, is that this hotel I stayed in is situated in the middle of RLD and the walls were made of paper...

I've read that hotel81's are also used for discreet encounters between consenting adults. *Cough* Just get earplugs and you'll be fine. Razz Singapore is such a nice city. Something totally different from Seoul!

Once you leave customs and collect your luggage, there is some desk set up run by the Singapore Hotel Association. You can even book a room right there. They have hotels in all price ranges. The cheapest I think is $80 or under (Singapore dollars) which is like $50 USD. When I was there, the lady said some place called Geylang/Kallang had the cheapest hotels, but that is where the RLD is, if you don't mind. Also, stomp around Chinatown.

Stay at one of the hotels across the causeway in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. They're usually much cheaper.

I have been to Singapore (just this past December) and stayed at two separate Hotel 81's - one in Geylang and the other in Chinatown. First things first, I sincerely doubt you will come across ANY Hotel 81's that are $50/night. Singapore, as a whole, is a bit expensive and if hostels are out of the question you are looking to spend AT LEAST $80/night.

Geylang - I would avoid this area if you have a low tolerance for hookers and their Johns. I don't know how much you know about Singapore but that is THE "red light" district of the place. I was a female travelling by myself and while the hotel itself was clean, the location was a bit seedy. Don't get me wrong: I had no problems, no one bothered me, but it comes down to the enviornment you want to surround yourself in. Also, the tram was a bit of a walk (about 10-15 min) from this particular Hotel 81.

Chinatown was like any other Chinatown - if that makes any sense. The hotel was a bit more expensive but the location was excellent. Tram right across the street.

But, I recommend looking ASAP - it is not like Thailand or anything. IMHO, it is better to get your room ahead of time.

I have been to Singapore and stayed in the New 7th Story Hotel, definitley not top class let's call it a 2 1/2 or 3 star hotel but really well located and clean. Also the prices are very resonable. The website is www.nsshotel.com I would stay there again for sure.

This place looks perfect... only $38 a night for a private double with a common bath? Not bad at all. Pics look clean, and it seems to be located in a good part of the city.

Thanks for all the responses!

Glad it helped hope you can get a room there, if you do end up staying there there are some great cheap restaurants close by. They serve Steamboats, I think they are called. Go out the front door and turn right, walk to the end of the little park and turn right at the end of the park. You will walk past the DHL Balloon. Keep walking straight and there are some restaurants there, they are cheap delicious and all you can eat. Also check out Arab street for delicious food, tea and shisha.

Checking out NSS Hotel on their website and I have a few questions maybe you can answer....
Do you know if the "common bath" they have for the cheaper rooms and backpacker rooms are decent? Big? Clean? Are they mixed sex or seperate for men and women? Are the showers gang style?

Also, are the backpacker rooms mixed sex? If we book a backpacker room, we want to be able to stay together...
Thanks for your help!
