Hi all,

If any of the board experts may be able to please answer...

1) does SMOE offer paid holidays to fly home at end of contract? am aware they offer 21 working days during contract, but do they offer extra to fly home and if so - how many paid days?

2) EPIK contract says it will provide 14 paid calendar days holiday to visit home if renewing contract...is this 14 calendar days in addition to the designated contract holidays of 14 working days?

3) for all 3 systems ( EPIK SMOE GEPIK)....is changing schools (within the same system) and end of year still considered as renewing your contract?.... i want to still be eligible for free return airfare and paid holiday to visit home between contracts, but will changing schools within the same system make me ineligible?

I have copied below from GEPIK 2008 contract - but i still dont know if this makes me ineligible for paid holiday and paid return airfare to visit home

Article 6(Work Place)
2. Upon completion of the first year term, Employee may request for a change of school and region subject to approval by Employer, and this is not considered as a renewal of the term.

thankyou in advance for any responses

I read article 6 as saying you are NOT eligible for the 14 days paid holiday if you change schools within the system. - However this might be up to the discretion of the two principals involved. You should still be eligible for the airfare. Contract 1 gives you airfare to and from korea.. So should contract 2.

For GEPIK, I believe those 14 CALENDAR days are in addition to your 14 WORKING days holiday.

With all 3 contracts, its really simple. If you finish your 1 year then you get your 1 way ticket home. If you RENEW your contract before your year is up, then you get a round trip airfare and 2 weeks to visit your home.

As always, its up to your school to decide when you can go home. If you renew your contract, you won't necessarily be sent home for 2 weeks at the end of your contract. Your school may send you during winter or summer vacation so that you don't miss any days during the regular school year.

Also, when you renew your contract, the 14 days to go home is in addition to your existing vacation days. However, I do not think you can split up the days. For instance, you can't tell them you want to just spent 1 week at home and then allot the remaining 1 week to your other vacation days.

Your GEPIK article 6 you pasted says if you stay within the GEPIK system, but decide to change schools/areas, it doesn't count as renewing a term. There are ways around it.

When you renew your contract, you get 2 weeks to go home and the school pays for it. Lets say you want to switch schools and go somewhere else. You just tell School X "I want my place ticket home around March 1st." Then you tell your new prospective school Y "I want to start around March 15th."

There you go, you got 2 weeks at home, plus paid airfare home and back to Korea just like you were renewing your contract. All you miss out is 2 weeks of pay. If you REALLY have to change schools or areas then I think 2 weeks of pay is a small sacrifice.

I know people who want to spend more than 2 weeks at home. They use this method, except they tell their new school they want to start at a later date.

Also, SMOE has strict starting dates. GEPIK and EPIK you can start anytime. SMOE will only let you start in March or end of August. You are too late for the March jobs so you will have to wait til the end of August to start teaching for SMOE.

In EPIK if you change schools in the same province its considered renewing your contract. As for holidays, you've got to take all 14 days at once near the end of your contract.

So, for me it was the last two weeks of August. But since the students are out for summer vacation for the last 2 weeks of July and the first 2 weeks of August, potentially you could go home for 6 weeks. However that highly depends if they want you to do summer camps and whatever else they want you to do. I've renewed a few times, and usually take about 3 weeks in August. but don't really like going home for too long, so I get back early and just chill for a week or so. But they only pay for your round trip home.

why does my public school want me to reserve a one-way ticket,
when a round trip ticket is actually cheaper? do I have to reserve the one-way?

There could be a number of reasons. Maybe its a policy setup by the local educaiton department. Maybe the school's accountant figured they could write off more money if they bought 2 separate tickets. Maybe the school gets their own little discount from KAL on 1 way tickets but not round trip. Maybe the 1 way ticket if beter so you can show the Korean Tax Office that you are leaving the country and you can get your refund.
