I'm hoping to study Korean, but as I live 2 hours from Seoul near Pyeongtaek city it would be impossible to do the weeknight classes.

I'm hoping to take a Saturday or Sunday class, but the only one I could get info. about was the class at the Seoul Korean Language Academy, 4F Jichoun Building, 818-1, Yoksam-dong, Kangnam-gu, Seoul.

(www.seoul-kla.com) which offers Saturday classes either from 10-1pm, or 2-5pm, for 100.000 won per month. Those classes start every month at the beginning.

If there are any other Saturday or weekend classes that you can recommend.

Thanks for any feedback.

I think 2 hours a week of group lessons are just not enough to make any meaningful progress.

In any event.. 2 hours a week would be equal to 8 hours a month for 100,000., 12,500 per 2 hours or 6250 per hour for a group class.. not to mention your travel time and cost to Kangnam.

My suggestion, find a Korean tutor in your area for about 10,000 or lower per hour and study at/near home. Note.... buy a book from one of the more established Korean Language program and USE it in your private lessons.

Best of luck!!

Thanks for the response. But actually the lessons are for 3 hours per week, not two hours (the classes are from 10-1pm, or 2-5pm.

So that is 12 hours per month for 100.000 won which comes to about 8333 won per hour. Of course you have to factor in the journey from Anjung Ri (Pyeongtaek) which is about 6000 both ways, and the subway, etc.

I have always found the first month of learning any language the critical period, where progress can be made. If I can get the base knowledge and a 'system' to use, in order to learn the Hangeul writing system, and basic vocabulary patterns and word order, then progress can be made. But doing this with a book without guidance in the first month is frustrating, because when reading the stuff on your own (out loud) you don't know whether you're on track or not.

When I studied Mandarin at Providence University (Taichung, Taiwan) in 2005-2006 I took classes for 2 hours per day, 5 days a week for 5 months (December to end of April) and the progress made was enough to do the rest on my own. When you have small classes and a native teacher (who knows her stuff) behind you to correct you constantly it makes a big difference. It's a motivation tool, because most humans are inherently lazy - and without classes, you tend to let things slide.

Onnuri Church in Sobingo Dong has free lessons on Saturdays mornings. They have very good teachers, offer several levels, small classes, and it almost free. They emphasis grammar and traditional learning. PM if you want more info.

Also.. at Korea.net, if you do a search for "Committe teachers run free Korean classes" you will find out more about a Saturday afternoon class. These classes seem to emphasis conversation. Just my opinion as I have not yet been.
