This was really interesting. One guy avoids the line 1 subway because of bad experiences.

He talks about being a soldier in Korea, taxis, Hongdae, the press, that traffic incident.

Have a listen.

This is nothing new. The worst I remember it being is when the two middle school girls were killed by a military vehicle in 2002 I believe? An American soldier, not involved in the incident, was kidnapped by college students and taken to a stadium. He was then forced to apologize for military crimes against Korea or something to that effect. I have no idea why the American military continues to subsidise Korea's economy with its presence. If Korea doesn't want the military there, it's time to get out.

I happened to listen to this tonight as well. I give the soldier who did this credit for being professional about it. I hope he doesnt end up taking any crap when the Korean net Nazis get a hold of it and start whining because an American soldier has the nerve to dislike kimchi. Just wait and seethis podcast will be a major news story in the upcoming week or so.

I talked to a soldier who said he pretty much only had good experiences in Korea. I think people have different experiences. Some Koreans do respect American soldiers and Americans.

About two months ago I was at a bar the served Miller Genuine Draft. My buds and I sat down to some American soldiers. We ended up combining the tables. You could tell that they were wary of the bill so we kept ordering and when it came time to pay the bill, us poor English Teachers paid the entire thing. The soldiers protested, but we said it was the least we could do. It was refreshing to be able to have a drink with someone and not have to "talk shop". Plus they were young and humorous. The corporal tried to give me 70,000 won, but I turned it down. It was a classic night. One I will remember for a long time.

He was in fact taken from the subway and taken to Kyunghee University and beaten and then forced to apologize for things that were way over his head....

Let's not forget about Matthew Seller (R.I.P)- the controversy surrounding his death is still unresolved................

I still think American soldiers have alot more leeway in regards to status than English teachers......it wasn't like that until 2000, back then it was like any non-military affiliated American was considered to be a rockstar..........all that changed after 2005

And a lot of soldiers have treated Korean people like crap too. It goes both ways.

I haven't noticed any particular change in regard to that. It was in Spring '06 that I got my banner strung across the street.

I learnt from some air force friends that Hongik University is not an arts university, but an insurgent training ground, and they regularly string up foreigners from lightposts there. The more you know.

When I lived in Jinhae I had occassion to talk to a number of US Navy guys stationed there on the tiny US base, and guys from off the various ships. Didn't meet one that wasn't an upstanding guy. I was impressed.

I think despite a lot of hatred towards the American soldiers here, a lot of Koreans are happy with the U.S. Military presence here because they know the U.S. has got their back if anything were to go down.

It's kind of FD up that many younger Koreans forget the sacrifices that were made here on behalf of the U.S., as well as Australia, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Ethiopia, France, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, Denmark, Italy, Norway, and Sweden.

Yes, this is true and all actions of this nature should be equally condemned and not used as justification for the other.
