Question: I am married, on the F-3 visa and have a child. I've recently considered going back to work, but don't want to work a full 6-7 hour day because of our child. Obviously I don't need airfare, housing, etc.
But I wonder if it's even possible to get a visa for part-time work--i.e. for two or three hours a day. Most likely teaching since my degree is Journalism/English. Can you get a visa for work if you're not full time? Has anyone ever been sponsored for a visa for part-time work?

I knew a guy (co-worker) who got an E-2 visa for a part time position.
So that part of it is okay.
I think the biggest problem might be getting an employer who wants to sponsor your visa for a part time position. |

I'm in a similar situation, also having an F3 visa. I tried for 6 months to find a part-time job that would give me an E2 visa, but no luck. I've now given up and just teach with my current visa. I've always gotten different answers about working on an F3 visa (some websites say you can't, immigration people I've asked say you can, others don't know...), but I've been doing it for awhile now with no legal issues.
The main problem is that many people have never heard of an F3 visa, and more than once I've been accused of making it up. Often times employers will choose someone with an F2, even if they're less qualified than you. I've only found this with Korean employers, though - foreign employers seem able to understand this simple concept of not having an F2 or F4 but still being legally in the country.
So, having an E2 will make applying for work easier, but you can still work with an F3. |
