Sorry if this is a dumb query (or doesn't make much sense since it's hard for me to explain), but I've never done this before...
My old hard drive (Maxtor, 250GB - almost full) got corrupted and I think mechanically busted too (was making noises) so I took it out and connected it to a laptop externally by USB. I bought another external HD (320GB) and using the program "File Recover for Windows" I scanned the old one then copied the whole thing (around 230GB) as an image over to the new one. So that was fine, but then what I ended up with was a whole bunch of ".arc files", and I don't really know what to do from there (never dealt with those kind of files before)...
Basically I had to copy all the data like that as an image kind of urgently since the old HD is pretty messed, I think it could just die for good anytime. But I then tried to "recover" the data from all those .arc files in that file recovery program I was using, but can't seem to do it (not even sure if that's what I was supposed to do - I think only a little of the data was corrupted). All I really want is to get my movies, music, documents etc. (quite a lot - around 100GB) into their recognizable file types and store them on the new external HD, I don't care about losing everything else as I have all my software on CDs (don't really have enough $ for a new computer yet anyway). In short, does anyone know if I can just extract those files from all the .arc files? Using a program akin to winzip or something? I tried googling it, but nothing came up with the answer. Would really appreciate any advice.
(Btw, the laptop is my friend's, and has very little free space so I can't really use that for temporary storage, gotta keep it all on my external drive)... |

It can't hurt to try to extract the files, or at least some of them.
Get "7zip"...very powerful and free, to do the job. Take one .arc file, copy it somewhere and use it as a guinea pig...extract it and see what happens. If you get your files back, then great. If not, post back with what you do get and we will take it from there.
"File Recover for Windows" is the exact name of the software you used? |

I would also try putting the drive in an external case and then running Stellar Pheonix fat & ntfs which is a file recovery program. If your drive will spin it will be able to recover most of your files.
good luck.

I tried 7zip, but it seems the .arc files are not supported. I can open it up using that program, but when I try to extract it I get a message saying "Maxtor 6L250ROBAJ41.arc is not supported archive" (this was just one of the .arc files - there are about 60 of them total, each is ~4GB, I tried opening and extracting three different ones but got the same result, same when I tried extracting all 60 of them at once).
I tried to download some programs that would deal specifically with extracting from .arc files, but there weren't too many I could find. One was called "Arc521", but I think it's for linux (I can't figure out how to install it on windows), another called "nomarch 1.4", and another called "zlib 1.2.3" (mentions something about a file called zlib.dll) but can't figure out how to install them on windows either (maybe linux as well). Not sure if any of those work in the way I need anyway.
Maybe I'm just treating these files wrong, I'm used to .zip files, where you can just extract the files out no problem, but maybe these .arc files are a totally different thing. Not sure... seems pretty complicated, and tedious since each file is so huge. If I can figure it out somehow (I'll try to get my friend who knows about computers better than me to come take a look too) I'll let you know. If you have any other suggestions in the meantime, I'd love to hear it. Cheers.

Sorry, it's actually called "File Recovery for Windows" by Seagate Recovery Services |
