heard nader was on "meet the press" and said he is gonna run for president.

imagine if both he and ron paul run on separate IND tickets. would they cancel each other and thus have a moot effect?

this slam dunk obama victory train may have along journey uphill yet.

Nadar pulled 0.3% of the popular vote last in 2004. In 2008, he will be a non-factor

the 2007 world almanac:
"In 2000, Ralph Nader won about 3% of the vote."

and lotsa folks blame/thank him for the razor thin difference in fla. the last go round.

As Joe points out, the last go around was 2004, not 2000. I tend to agree (and hope) as Joe and Ya-ta (although he said it on the other thread) that Nader won't be a factor.

I was thinking about registering the domain www.screwnader.com but alas it is already taken.

Why aren't Paul supporters screaming for a Nader/Paul ticket. Yes, I know they have some big differences. Maybe together they could form their own third party.

That's why.

0.3% can be a factor in a close election.

Ron Paul pulled in more than a few who have views outside the mainstream. Since Paul started this up it would not be much to expect that Nader does at least as much as he did in the last election and maybe slightly better.

Are you all satisfied with system as it stands? I like some of Nader's ideas, but he is running in the wrong system. The system has no place for him, unfortunately. I like the man and met him. However, I would vote for Obama, not Nader. It is not Nader's fault that Gore lost. It is definitely possible Gore would have been president if Nader didn't run.
What can be done to allow third party members into Congress. I know the only way you could have say a coalition government is if America had a parliamentary system, but that would never happen. What could make the system more democratic? What about having a first and second choice when electing a president? Can't that solve many problems?

The funny thing is that last time around, he announced on Feb 22, 2004. He makes a big show of "making up his mind", but he's going to run every time regardless of who the Democrats put up.

I'm honestly torn between admiration and condemnation for Nader. On the one hand, he's correct that neither the Democrats nor the Republicans are able to address the fundamental things that are broken in our system. On the other hand, given the fact that one of the two major-party candidates is going to win this election, it's irresponsible not to choose the lesser evil. I do not, for instance, believe that a President Gore would have invaded Iraq. Continued sanctions, yes; bombed the hell out of the place, very possibly; pursued various irresponsible foreign policies, almost certainly (hello Kosovo); but invading and occupying a Middle Eastern country with the intent to "nation-build" is past Gore's threshold of crazy.

Well, it's a free country, and anyone can run for President, but I'm not going to vote for him. I wouldn't vote for him even if the D and R choices were more than usually odious.

That's not really true. We have always had coalition governments. Our two parties are coalition parties. We don't really have national parties. We have 100 state parties that combine in various combinations to make 2. The Republican Party of Iowa is not really the same party as the Republican Party of New York, for example. They just find it convenient to cooperate (to whatever extent they do).

nowhere: which thread should be locked? the one you cited or the one you entered? PM dave if you have so much time you want to be a moderator. but don't drop in on someone else's wave and tell them to stop surfing. Wink
true, i didn't see the other one. but mr. joo, the originator of the other thread, seemingly has no problem with adding insights to both threads. we await yours yet.
the campaign season is the closest we ever get to a national discussion on anything. so, if this is the time in the political cycle that new ideas get discussed or old ideas dusted off i am all for nader/paul/ whomever imploring us to raise our expectatons above business as usual.

and yes, the thought of an election with a handful of marquee names instead of the veted two would be invigorating and would really turn out the vote and thus be good for our republic.
