Breaking news: Saudi Arabia to boycott Damascus summit
Friday, 22 February, 2008 @ 10:58 PM

Beirut / Riyadh - Saudi Arabia has decided today to boycott the Arab summit in Damascus scheduled for March 27-29 , 2008 according to Almustaqbal TV station , which is owned by the Hariri family

Almustaqbal said the reasons for the boycott are:

- Syria's continued interference in Lebanon's internal affairs and lack of coopeartion in ending the crises
- The attacks by Syria and its Lebanese allies against Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has been warning Damascus that if Syria did not cooperate on ending the Lebanese crises, then the Arab summit will be at risk.

Saudi arabia has also issued a travel advisory restricting its citizens from travel to Lebanon. This advisory prompted the Iranian and Syrian backed Hezbollah-led opposition to attack Saudi Arabia .

Since Saudi Arabia is considered a leader in the Arab world more than half the Arab leaders will be expected to follow suite and boycott the summit especially Egypt , Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain and Morocco

Many observers in Lebanon are now of the opinion that the summit will be canceled , since Syria is determined not to cooperate on the Lebanese presidential crises as long as the International Tribunal is not scrapped .

The purpose of the Tribunal is to try the killers of Lebanon's former PM Rafik Hariri and the related crimes .

Syria is worried that the Tribunal will spell the end of the Syrian regime once the top Syrian brass is called to testify over the Hariri murder

Good; glad to see one of the major Arab states showing some moral spine for a change.
