When I first came here over a year ago the 1000won was getting me around $1.28 Australian dollars. It has slowly gotten lower and lower. Today I checked the rate 1000 won gets me $1.14 that means for my monthly salary (and all other Australians) I have lost over 10% of my salary when transfering money back to Australia.

I just hope it doesn't get lower-----

How are all other expats conversion rates going? (Canuks, Americans etc)

Welcome to the average Canadian's world Evil or Very Mad .... When I started it was 750won to the dollar. Now it's about 950. Twisted Evil

(sorry 'bout the hijacking) ====> scratch that. I didn't see you asking about the other expats, so I guess there was no hijacking at all.

Like Newbie said, it sucks for Canadians.

Unfortunately, it's quite good for Americans. If it were bad for all the English speaking countries, Korea would probably have to raise wages or watch teachers go. I'm stuck here, so I'm just hoping the won does better before I go home in a few years.

When i first got here over 6 years ago the conversion rate was 55 cents to 1000 won.

So basically $1.90 I could get...
It has been all downhill since...

So imagine how i feel...

It won't get better.

It's not so much that the Kiwi, Canadian and Aussie dollars are strong, but the US dollar is weak.
The won should be much stronger but the government here manipulates the currency to keep it artificially weak.
The dummies at the Bank of Korea have lost Billions on US Treasuries and Securitized Mortgages in the US in order to stem the rise of the won.

Out of curiosity, how many university grads do you know who fit this description?

Personally, I was making over 45,000 in Canada, before I came here. I don't think I had a job that paid min. wage since I was 16 years old, but if you fit in to this catagory, ....

I think the only people who compare this to flipping burgers at $8/hr are the folks who bought thier degree from a back alley in Bangkok before they made thier way over here.
